Defender TD5 Fuel pump noise- what is normal?

...just what is a 'normal' sound for a 110 TD5 fuel pump... mine makes a fairly constant but steady mid pitch whine even when engine started. Has done ever since I got it 6 months ago. Starts on the button and runs well, but I am getting concerned I might be dumped on the side of a road in the future?

you can hear them if stood near the tank filler,but shouldnt from the cab, ive found a good percentage of pumps have the inlet screens partially blocked,changing the air bleed valve rear outer pie on filter head is a good idea

They vary a bit in terms of how much noise they make. I ran a cheap one for a while and it was noisy. So much so that for several months I carried a spare in the back just in case it needed changing. However, the noisy pump carried on for another two years or so. I've got an OEM one in now (Siemens brand possibly, I can't remember) and it is much quieter. I have to concentrate quite hard to hear it.
