A std defender speedo will fit as the cable goes from the dash to the transfer box!!
BUT if you have a disco tranny it won't fit as they are elec on disco

Same problem, same setup. Your in luck buddy!
my cable had sheared at the dashboard end, so I had to shell out for a new one. I bought a disco one to match the gearbox but it fit the speedo on the defender dash.
my replacement one was plastic and metal, compared to the all metal one I removed. cost: £7.50
Simple job:
- remove dash from fittings and pull out plug from back of speedometer (might have to twist the backshell on it to free it)
- find your gearbox, take a 10mm spanner and undo the bolt holding the retaining plate for the speedo cable.
- open bonnet and remove cable from dash through bulkhead and from guts of motor, careful you don't pull owt else out.
- same place, feed our new cable through bulk head and through guts of motor to gearbox output.
- fit to gearbox end as reverse of removal
- fit to dash end, firm force is needed here, if it won't go, don't force!
- put dash back and go for a spin.

disco transfer box if from a 200tdi is same cxable fitting as a defender ,if from a 300 tdi you need to swap speedo gear in transfer box as no cable fits them ,
Thanks for that,the only problem i have got now,is that ive just discovered that the sender unit on transfer box is electronic. Ive removed the star drive bolt holding it in and now ive got a defender cable and dont know how im going to connect it to the drive on transfer box. Any suggestions please.

you need to prise out the disco speedo gear and fit the one from your old defender box and retainer and stud
