Defender roof console

Most cbs come with some sort of mounting bracket like this so you could fit it to the bottom of your radio section



Also mounting the cb underneath gives you space to put switches and 12v sockets alongside the radio. Could another interchangeable panel here. Good place to keep phones charged or sat navs plugged in if you are wading..

Again you could offer different options like raptor do for their consoles

its a tricky one to mount them but both the Cdplayer and CB have mounting holes one each side could you weld some tabs inside the console and use some small screws to hold them in.

also using the Din mount cage the rear of the unit shouldnt bounce up and down as this is how they are mounted normally with no rear support.

ohhh.. I like that LRjack! that would certainly make life easier to fix the units

Beardy, yeh, they do have holes, i might weld some tabs to screw to it, but once the units are in, there isnt much space on the sides to put a screw driver in.

and didnt want to drill the side of the console, dont think it would look nice

todays update....

removed the strut off the middle, marked the front and fitted rivnuts, cant mark the back till I weld the cover on the top, so I'm sure it's all square..

It's going to be a pain to cut and fit the roof lining properly.... not looking forward to that.
The shelf for the CB/radio could have also been smaller, but when I cut it I was planning on keeping the roof strut so it was to give it enough room for the strut.... but then again, if it was too narrow, I wouldnt be able to fit the tabs I'll explain below.





Also, had a think about how to fix the radio and CB... what do you guys think of this idea?
If you look at the photos below, the block of wood would be radio, then you'd have adjustable tabs, I would weld one on the top plate of the console and the other one would be free to move up and down and then both bolted together...

this would also suit different sizes of radio and CB...

Sounds like a nice idea, but most cd players/radios are the same size aren't they so where is the need? CBs are different but usually have their own mounts. Why complicate things? Probably best to keep things simple especially if you want to start making a few of these.

How are you going to be able to access the back of the radio when the top is welded in? You might have to make the bottom plate removable as it will be very fiddly trying to reach in and catch the right wires when fitting everything up. Is there going to be a hole high up in the side for wires to be fitted through from behind the headlining?

Can I just mention condensation and your cb........ it may go bang

well, CBs do have their own mounts, but to be able to access the sides of the CB the console would have to be wider... which then i think it would be too much.
by using the tabs anyone can have whatever they want in there and the tabs arent difficult to do... seemed to me to be the easiest option.. a length of metal, cut and fold, cut down the middle, job done.

and yep, there will be holes on the sides, near the top plate so you can get wires in, there's also enough room behind the radio/CB to tuck the wires, so you can pull both out the shelf and then disconnect the wires

that's a good point, didnt think of that as there is roof consoles available in the market so i just thought 'it will work'...
how to spot condensation then?

Perhaps if you mounted it with a suitably sized piece of closed cell foam sandwiched between the console and the roof it would minimise condensation, it would also prevent the roof and console vibrating against each other.

I bought a few packs of this stuff Clarke Anti Fatigue Foam Floor Tiles - Pack Of 6 - Machine Mart To line the back of my 90,

It's about 10mm thick.
Closed cell so it won't absorb moisture.
Quite dense so has good sound and vibration deadening properties.
It compresses quite well so would "sandwich" and stay in place.

The stuff I got came from KDA wholesale in Barnsley at just over half the price of MM.

ho yeh, i knew the stuff, had some of it sometime ago... quite thick as you say, need to find something around 2mm or so....

I have some office floor tiles, they are like rubber on one side and carpet on the other, squares of it, would that be any good? probbaly not i guess...

Im getting to the stage where the console will start to be a pain to finish as its the fiddly jobs now, like cutting the roof lining precisely to fit the console, weld tabs on the side of the console to screw and hold the lining, etc.....

and start the new job on Monday, so wont have as much time available either!

you need to talk a friendly floor layer nicely

DPM.. is that the blue stuff? that looks like plastic sheet? I have a roll of that in the garage...

All the radios ive seen have a m4 or similar thread in the middle of the back and if you look in the hole for them on a lot of vehicles there is a donut, you had a 20-40mm bar that threaded in the back of the radio and then sat in the donut and stopped it jumping about, So you can put a metal plate at the front of the shelf cut a din size hole and use the cage then have a tab at the back for the bar th go through,

As for the CB you can have it next to the radio and use the small holes on the side, make up some tabs for the side and cut J-Slots in them then use small screws and thread lock them into the cb and then you can just slide the CB Down and it will be secure.

Just had another thought, you could use the self adhesive foam tape that window fitters use to attach trim, it comes in various widths and thicknesses uPVC Windows, uPVC Doors, Conservatory Roofs, Soffits & Fascia, Composite Doors or somewhere similar should be able to sell you what you need.

That's a good point.

My idea was not too have any screws at the bottom of the shelf, but i think its something I'll have to have.

I've noticed my radio has to threaded holes at the bottom so I can screw it to the bottom shelf.
and as you say, use the CB mount the same way, thread lock the side bolts and put the CB on its mount and then screw the mount from the bottom.

This means there will be 4 screws at the bottom of shelf but its the easiest way, even for the future when i do more consoles.

Why at the bottom but a bar across the top

if i put a bar across the top you wont be able to screw it in, no room for screw driver.... well, maybe there is on this one i made, but if i get to make more, i'll make it smaller as i think there's too much space between the radio/cb and the top
