Does anyone have one?

saw this on eBay..

Land rover Defender Roof console | eBay

the price is just ridiculous, but in another moment of boredness I might give a go at building one.

im quite handy at metal fabrication and it doesnt seem that hard to do, flat metal sheet, 2 side bits cut with the roof shape, weld and bend.. job done.

but...

how the hell would you fix it to the roof?
surely not by screwing it straight to the roof as it would come out on the outside...
as i havent taken the roof lining out yet, i was just wondering if anyone knows...

Smart, but 'ouch' on price

Mine has 2 (not sure what they are called - struts?) inside the roof which run full length - looks like it's spaced about right width wise to screw into those with short self tappers

that was my guess, that there was some struts... but as i said, havent taken the lining out yet....

once i confirm those struts are present I shall get to work and build one of those..

have a mate that makes them, full consoles, consoles with TV's all in LR trim, will get the www for you in a bit

the struts you mention i am presuming you mean the roof ridges but on memory they only go to just behind the front seats. plus the ridges would need to be internal not external for that to work. so unsure how that would work as i don't think the head lining would be strong enough to take the weight of a stereo and c.b., but keep us posted how ya get on.

just emailed lrs on ebay asking how it fixs in so will update when i get a reply

if i'm thinking this right, and bear in mind i havent taken the lining off yet..

there will be some struts that run from the back to the front, from the back I mean just where the roof splits, as if you had a pick up 90.

im guessing, and lets imagine here, these struts are just box section running along, possibly 1" or 1,5", meaning the console can be bolted to this, of course 1" gap is not enough to fit a CB or radio, so the sides of the console will have to drop lower than this... just like its on the pic.

I've been doing some drawings this evening and all I need is 5 pieces of metal...roughly.
probably less if i can get hold of a metal folder

not sure what thickness steel should get though, 1mm?

just took a pic of some of what i've been drawing...

Been thinking about this myself as a steel fabricator thought i might have a go, a friend of mine is a sheet metal worker and has folders. would prob use 1mm poss less as once folded would make it more ridged could also fold other bits and tig them into it. going to give it a bit more thought and have a play when i have a bit of time.
so yes have a go

wow! that's spooky!!

i just looked at the pic and you can see the keyboard underneath! however, its a folded sheet of A4 paper and I cant see the keyboard through it.. but it can clearly be seen on the pic!

what i was saying in my previous post was this is you look on the roof in this ebay ad.

Landrover 90 Roof Tdci New In White | eBay

the struts are visual even though they are internal and they stop before they get to the area that you would need them to be able to fix the roof console. i may be wrong

but that's from the outside.... isnt there anything on the inside?

anyway, as redhand says, can put my own struts using the bolts where it joins to windscreen and rear half of roof...

if I have time tomorrow I'll get the lining out and update on my findings!

keyboard a4 paper what ?????? confused  lol

look at the pic with the drawing.. cant you see the computer keyboard, very faint on it?

the pic is off an A4 sheet, folded in half, over my keyboard.
if i look at the sheet i cant see the keyboard, however, it happears on the pic!
