Hi guys

Im in a bit of a mess, ive got a 1996 defender 90 300 tdi with 100K on the clock

I took for an mot and it needs a new chasis

I havent got that sort of money so it may have to go, the question is what sort of money could I ask for it as a project?

It has a brand new leather interior and inside its mint, with new side windows, on the outside to paintwork is good except a couple of small bubble patches.

Alternatively if I had a new chasis put on at £2500-£3K would I get my money back if I sold it?

It surely muct be worth more than 1k? theres a old farm yard defender on ebay that needs a new chasis, same year at £1300

I wish I could do it myself but ive never touched a car in my life

Obviously we can only see so much from those pictures, but that can be repaired by a decent mobile welder. Worse chassis than that get plated-up every week to get old Defenders etc through their MoTs. Garage just doesn't want the work.

Its true they said they didnt really want to repair it, can you recomend a good welder, you arent too far from me in

It's really not that bad mate, if that came into our workshop, my colleague would consider it 'a good 'un' :D Looks like a typical Defender to me
I'm afraid the mobile chap I used to use no longer operates and our welding is done in house now.

Think the first step is to get it back and investigated those rust areas more closely.

See how far you need to go to find decent metal.

then make a call from there.

But if there is only 4 - 5 holes/patches I would say its worth repairing as you will never get the cost back of doing a chassis swap onto a Galv.

that int bad at all mines had more patches than you've got holes in yours. and it's got an MOT till next August. Mind you it had an hole ya could get ya hand in. O/S front chassis leg. had to get a noo dumbiron and several inches of extra plate welded on it last week. not bad for a vehicle with a 3week old MOT

Fix it mate my series 3 was much worse and only cost me 90 quid u will miss her if she goes and then spend 30quid on some hammerite and go for it!

Take Pressbrake's offer - mine was far worse than that when I got it. I stripped the landy down to the chassis and the welder spent a whole day welding. Nine plates and an outrigger and it was sorted. For payment I took him and his misses out for a meal and free booze; unfortunately his drinking skills were better than his welding skills! Still, I'd have given him the £150 anyway. Been replaced with a galv chassis now thanks to the insurance company - but that's another tale.
