Defender Long Range fuel tanks

I'm currently on the look out for a secondhand tdi/td5 defender 90/110 preferably a 90 and looking into the possibilities of installing long range or an additional fuel tank to it.

I want to install a second fuel tank that would be independent of the standard one. I want to be able to fill the two tanks up with diesel and when one runs low that I can flick a switch to change over to the other tank. I don't want them to be connected together and be drawing fuel from the two of them at once but rather be using the one I choose to use.

Is this a big job to install and would a 110 be simpler to carry this out on rather than a 90 that I have my heart set on.

What is involved and where would you locate this additional tank. Will it need a separate fuel line up to the engine or can the switch over be made from behind? Will it need a separate?additional fuel pump in the new tank as well and what else is involved?

Can you recommend any kits to me that would be an easy fit?!

That's a complicated first post. My advice would be to do a search on ebadbay for a 'rotary ****flap projector electronic valve system' Or just take yer med meds and go to sleep.

Have a look an some car rallying websites, they will have some As they use similar bypass / shutoff valves for the braking system

I have two tanks in my 90
Both of the fill independently of each other
One is under the seat and the other is under the rear.
When the factory fitted one under the seat runs out then a v8 fuel pump pumps the fuel from the rear tank into the front tank.

But on my 110 I also have twin tanks but that is the other way round to the 90. The long range tank is under the drivers seat. But in the 110 it has a switch on the dash which changes
Over which tank is being used and shows the leval of each tank on the original land rover dash gauge.

So there is a few ways you can do it

If you get a ninety then , if its td5 tank will be at back, you can put another tank under drivers seat. If its a 300 tdi then its other way round .The best way to plumb it is as reads90 says designate biggest as main tank and pump 2nd or 3rd tank to main . If its a 110 then rear tank is main , you can fit under rear wing aux tank (extra 11 galls) fills at same time as main , and main fuel guage reads both . You can also fit another tank (11 galls) under driver seat , and pump to rear (main)
Which is the set up I have , you dont need second fuel guage as you know capacity of underseat tank and can just pump to main tank untill empty , which will indicate on main fuel guage , so you always know what you have . None of the above is just a straight bolt on job , except 110 aux tank . Its not a good move to have switch over taps etc on diesel engines as its another point that you can get air in system (stops engine) HTSH

remember the td5 has a in tank fuel pump so you secondary will need a fuel pump and control.

Well as said my 90 has the old style v8 fuel pump and a switch on the dash. So easy to do

I have a y junction on the filler neck. So if I tilt the fuel filler to the left it fills the back and if I tilt to the right it fill the front. Or in the middle then both

I have 300Tdi 110 with 2 tanks that are independent. Reserve tank under drivers side (Home made) filled from r/r seat area. Electric switch to change tanks draw, and even a second gauge to see at a glance how much fuel is in each, great! Main tank 80 lts, reserve tank 60 lts. Can travel Loooong way.

I was wondering what tank fits under the drivers seat? I saw on other topics on the forum that the standard 90 tank fits and is this true? Also if I fit a tank under the seat how do you fill it - do you have to remove the seat base each time? That doesn't really bother me its just at some stage no matter how careful I am some diesel will end up getting spill or overflow into the cab then!

How do you think a fuel selector such as this would work Andair
They have the option of Left/Both/Right so at least if I was changing between tanks I could select both first before the change over and run it on both to minimize the chance of an air lock.
