Hello Everybody,
I have just had my 1987 Defender C4 90 converted from petrol to a 200TDi (donated from a Discovery). Steve Parker supplied a conversion kit + various other stuff incl. new wiring and extensions to the cooling pipes etc.

Have any of you any experience with the temperature sensor from Steve P, which still shows my engine running quite hot (almost up in the red area)?

I havde no history of the Discovery engine. (It pulls very well between 2200-2700 rpm) The no is: 12 L 10606 A, can anyone point me to which year this matches?

On a different note I want to buy some "higher" tyres as the LT77 gearbox only offers in reality a 55mph comfortable cruising speed ca. 2800 rpm. (I stuck a rev counter in it.). When did the distances between the wheel studs change? (which rims can I buy that matches the car)?

Finally I need to produce an "engineers report to the MOT autorities and my insurance company". What must it include (apart from ofcourse old an new engine no.)

Sorry this has turned out to be a long story, any help would be very appreciated? :)

You MUST match the sender to the guage, so in other words, get the sender from your old petrol and screw it in (you may need to tap the hole) or get a 200tdi defender guage.

Fit a Discovery transfer box, it has nothing to do with the LT77, it's the same box in the Disco, the transfer box makes the difference, it will give you higher gear ratio and give you better motorway cruising speeds however low will remain unchanged.

Why do you need an engineers report? Contact the DVLA tell them its a 4 cylinder diesel.

Phone up insuarance and ask to insure your 1987 4 cylinder turbo diesel land rover, you have told NO lies and it is a LR engine and the V5 will match job done. MOTer won't even know because it will be a diesel on his system and it will have a diesel in it, job done. Give the DVLA the engine no. too.

Henrik Where abouts are you in the world? if you are local I may have a Disco Transferbox for sale that will be better for you

Hi Discomania,
Excellent, many thanks for the advice, all makes sense. Done as you suggested with DVLA and insurance.
Cheers
Henrik

Am I being a numpty here, but the engine has changed from PETROL to diesel, so the V5 will still show petrol?

Thats Telling no lies however: it is not going to work because they now read out the exact model as whats in their list and ask you to choose aswell as record what you are saying. Another thing you are not lying but you are trying to mislead with a view to get cheaper insurance. Which would make it void and pointless if you ever need it.

I would just tell them my premium didn't go up after a change from the na to TDI. The only difference was when it had an agreed value and the modification list was sent in.

Hello Jai
I am sometimes going up the M1 and A1 on business so might be able to orrganise a pickup. let me see what I can do. £60 is a good price many thanks. Bear with me afore a a week or two and I'll cpme back.

Insured by NFU gave them the facts in a letter and they are fine with that no change in the annual premium of £135 fully comp. insued for £3,000. Will speak to DVLA tomorrow.

Hello Jai
