Defender broke down, need help where to start

Hey guys, my defender has broken down and do not know where to start troubleshooting. It was driving normally until I turned it off for 15 mins and when I turned it back on it had a bad knocking sound coming from the engine bay, I thought I might make it home, started driving and the noise got louder and eventually engine cut out about 5kms down the road, had to get a tow truck back home. It is a 1996 300tdi with 260000kms on it. It still cranks over, any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Bit silly wasn't it, driving with a bad engine knock

Sump off jobbie that, probably a good idea to pull it out and rebuild it, all parts readily available.

My 200Tdi Disco has 350,000kms on it.

A 300Tdi should just about be run in on 160,000 miles(which is what 260,000kms equates to).

Does need a tear down tho!

Could have been diesel knock...have you checked for fuel?
