Defender Brake compensatet

I'm a bit confused here, so to avoid any more, can you give precise details of the MOT failure please? And also how they tested the brakes ? ( As Nobber mentioned, Tapley meter ONLY for permanent 4WD !)

I know you say they don't work when jacked up and pedal pushed, but, seeing as you have replaced just about everything ( bar the pipe ), it all sounds a bit weird :confused:.

Have you removed the compensator yet - even as a trial ?
 
Seems an odd MOT test ...........road test with decelerometer only for brakes , and theres no way to decide the rears aren't doing much , and a compensator is supposed to limit the pressure to the rears when lightly loaded anyway...........I'de take it somewhere else mate ......If you're feeling vindictive ask them for an appeal form :rolleyes:
 
All, Thanks for the replies, I am going to bypass the compensator tomorrow to see what difference it makes.
The mot failure just said rear brakes not working . Pedal travels to the boards , suggesting air in system. Has been power bled but will go around it all again tomorrow (If it's warmer !) And re-bleed.

unless the valve is leaking air in or fluid out i would think its air or too much travel, pads and shoes, was pedal travel an issue prior to changing master cylinder
 
Did your rears ever work? You might have the wrong master on there, can you get some photos of the braking system?
 
Oh, and is your servo working properly? Its not that your rears dont work, they do, its more that all the pressure is going to the front, so my guess is you have a problem at the front, bulging brake pipe? Try getting someone to press the pedal, engine running and keep it pressed, look at the fronts, wait a minute then see if its braking at the rear keeping the pedal down all the time.

Back the adjusters right off on the rear brakes .......then bleed them , adjust up after all the air is out
 
Nobber, I'll try that tomorrow thanks. They did work previously ive had it about 5 years and never had an issue with most (used the same garage each year).
 
Don't run it without the compensator valve, it prevents the rear brakes locking up under heavy braking. If the rears lock up the vehicle will become unstable and likely to spin, a bit like a hand-brake turn in a normal car.
