I have a LHD 1991 110 in Bahrain. It has standard north American spec A/C, with a big sealed unit under the bonnet on the right.

My issue is the AC blower fan has stopped working intermittently. The fan is within the sealed unit. On rare occasions (once in the last fortnight), it works fully, on all speeds. When I turn off the ignition and restart, I lose it.

I have checked the following:

- Switch, appears fine, as still switches on relays for the AC compressor when moved from position 0 to 1.
- Resistor pack, appears fine, I have rewired it and checked it with a multimeter.
- Relays, appear fine, click when signal load is introduced.
- Fuses, appear fine, fan works sometimes
- Earth, appears good, checked with multimeter.

Given the fact the fan sometimes comes on, I can only assume that the motor works. It does not smell or sound ‘burnt’.

There are only two wires coming out of the main AC sealed unit. A red, and a black which runs to earth. I assume the only part to be powered within this box should be the fan, and therefore wiring these wires up directly should lead to it running? – it does not, despite putting 12v directly across them.

Am I doing something wrong, have I missed anything, or am I resigned to think there is a dodgy connection within the (expensive) sealed unit?

(Other elements such as the AC radiator fans, and the compressor clutch are wired externally, and do not go through the sealed unit. Temperature control is by cables, which are locked in the fully cool position – nothing else is required!)

Thanks in advance for any help!

James - yes, connecting red wire to another live source from the engine bay. Black remains earthed to bulkhead.
