So i put the defender in for a service a week or so ago and as per my "introduce yourself thread" the main thing they found wrong was one of the snail cams in the real drum brake was broken and needed replaced. So finally got the part number and ordered the part...result!! Took the landy down to the garage to have the new cams fitted today and get some other bits tweaked only to be told by my guy that its the wrong part!! There is only one type of snail cam for landrover drum brakes as confirmed by landrover but the broken one on mine is about 5-7mm larger circumferance a different metal and slightly thinner!!

So!! could this have been a military bodge? to allow the current shoes to fit? or am i missing something....

Theories please guys.......

Ok look at the bacl of the landrover can you see bolts holding the diff pan on if not look from the front can you see nuts looking from the front of the landy backwards. Jai

Hi, no nuts at the back only the drain plug. All nuts at the front looking back. So not like the photo as the pic looks like i can see nuts at the back.
cheers for this..

Its a rover diff then. Post a pic of the cam it mabe be a LWB back plates 11 inch instead of 10 inch standard brakes Jai

does the part that was sent look anything like the following ?

LAND ROVER BRAKE ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT KIT NEW LWB SWB on eBay, also, Land Rover, Classic Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 15-Mar-09 22:53:26 GMT)

or the below for just a single wheel

land rover series 1 2 2a 3 brake adjuster kit single on eBay, also, Land Rover, Classic Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-Mar-09 10:57:23 GMT)

the quality of the components within the second link is awefull, the first is much much better (ignore the tatty packing)

OK... the story gets worse it seems... phoned PA Blanchards and sent them the above pictures. They have never seen cams that big and have no ideas why they are on my landy or how to rectify the problem of the new cams not fitting.....

they could possibly be from an old bedford truck adapted to fit by the army might be worth asking a mil specalist Jai

Hi Sean,
Parts came from craddock p/n RTC3176 which was a complete set for 4 drums.
cheers

90's don't have 4 drums??? they have discs up front Have they sent you series brake parts?? and are they different to 90 drums??

edit..

Just looked in the Manual and they don't even have snail cams to adjust. just springs. what year is your 90?

Hi its a 1991, drums on the rear and discs on the front. The military were a bit slow putting discs all round and used series drums on the first defenders they had. The cams are the same part for all. Made more phone calls and no one has seen these size cams so looks like i need to replace the backing plates and everything else at the mo .... expensive job !!

I have an 87 90td with rear drums front disc brakes as well. Don't remember then having cams but I'm sure they must have had em. or they wouldn't self adjust?? Might be easier to just get a complete axle off ebay.
