Defender 90 as Campervan

Loving this thread! I'm in the process of building my own 110 Camper. I went to see a friend a couple of months ago and he had this literally in a hedge... I was only after the sides and came away with the entire 110! It's a 1988 110 V8 and I'm stripping it down to galvanise the chassis, drop in a 300 Tdi, rebuild with galvanised bulkhead, galvanised cappings etc and put back together...

It'll be fully insulated, ply lined, inverter, winch, wolf wheels, brownchurch Roofrack, caranex tent to rear and roof tent. I'm reconfiguring a jetski trailer to take my kayak and touring bicycles and the kids bikes.

Apart from UK and Ireland camping trips I plan to drive the length of Scandinavia to see the northern lights!

Sounds like a project well worthy of it's own thread!

That's the plan, just trying to finish my 110 hi-cap or sell as a project to concentrate on this baby!

Nice, I am hoping to embark on a similar project shortly, it would be worth starting up a fresh thread to keep track of your progress.

The MPG will be horrendous on a 110 camper so I was thinking about building a mobile veg oil filtering rig to take on the road, any thoughts on that?

I'll start a post shortly, just want to clear the shed and get Christmas out of the way... Then I'll have time to actually progress with pace... Await my 300 Tdi engine/gearbox combo arriving as well...

Vid just goes to show 90's are as much good for sleeping in as a Ford Fiesta. Thanks for informing the cerebrally challenged on here not to bother.

I'm doing a 130 camper-converison. Is good fun.
Im 6'3" and have found that by sleeping corner-to-corner, i fit just just great.
Luckily the missis is only 5'6"!

Good god, you lot are putting a lot of time and effort into these things.

My 90 camper is almost complete. So far it has taken 10 minutes of the guy at the woodyards time. To finish it off it will need another 10 minutes to cut the tube I haven't yet got

Sorry this is an older thread but I came across this which might be of interest to anyone in the future looking to do a Defender 90 camper conversion. Its a german company called Ex-Tec making a 'poptop' style roof for Defenders, of course they are mostly made for 110's but I did find this 90 in there archives.

I have looked into these people but they are bloody expensive for what they are. I am surprised that nobody in the uk makes these. Maybe I should start and I could make my million that way.

There must surely be a market for them...?

I don't mind those Ex-Tec ones from the rear but at the front it seems to keep the same 'high' profile, if it could be lower at the front or taper down to the front like the original roofline then I think it would be an improvement on the styling of them. Especially on the 90 which is obviously a shorter vehicle then I think they begin to look a touch top heavy, at the front anyway.

I think I might get one of those roof rack tents and save the hassle

I've just re-found this thread, i remember the first time i found it i was looking for inspiration to build a bed in my 90... thought id share my solution! ill take a photo of the finished thing tomoz (its lashing it down outside atm).


The front of the cab has now got slats like the rear and on my first trip i used hard board to top the slats and slept on a roll mat and sleeping bag, however my girlfriend has now insisted we use a thin mattress. This can all fold down, or be taken out completely as the landcover has not been at all modified to take the bed (you might just see the bench seats under it).

I know I'm late to the thread and last post to it was in jan 2014, however i won't be the last person to want to sleep in my land rover so i might as well share my idea for the next person... the only reason i re-visited this thread is because now I'm gonna turn the back into a seating area/kitchen area which folds down and the bed gets assembled over it!

I don't know if this is reall.... but I wants one!!

Drop down bed!!??

I've had an idea of building a bed frame that can clip up on to the internal gutter with mattress when not in use, and then lower down to rest at bulkhead level for sleeping... with some kind of flap (or folding dog guard) to level the area in front of the bulkhead where the front seats are folded?
At present I am considering a light square section steel frame with a weldmesh cover... some sort of spring loaded tangs to locate on gutter, and lower tub cappings?

Possibly not great for long term trips, but ideal for the odd night on the road?... and still have 80% use of the rear load area for the rest of the time...

Anyone tried something like this?... would be grateful for some pointers before I start.

one door hinge per door ????!!!!!!!!! back door hinge secured to bottom of front door so how can they open !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
