On my way to wales last weekend 80 odd there miles and a days greenlaning 100 miles ish i then filled up and for a change worked out my MPG at 19 but i was pushing it a bit on the way there what do the rest of you get??

that's ****e I think, they should achieve over 30MPG, sometimes upwards of 35 I've been told. My N/A achieves 25 running between 65 and 75 on big 235x85 AT's with a chunky tread pattern. I've managed to hit 30.06 on a run to Durham but that was with little 235x70 tyres driving at 55 all the way. Try lifting your foot a few cm's. Obviously the green laning will have reduced your mpg massively.

100 miles on the lanes sometimes in low ratio I don't think that's to bad. Yes 30mpg is possible but only if you're driving on the road at careful speeds.

Heh... I get 30 towing a laden 1 ton trailer. Think I've found another reason I like the 200 over the 300 ;)

Best I've achieved on a tank is 37 overall, but then I was being very nice to it and there was a lot of motorway in that.

Had 38 once but that wasn't a full tank and was almost all motorway - just before the water pump failed.

normally 28/29 in my 90 300tdi with bfg at's

but when i had to tow an L200 over the north downs and a few other hills i got 24 - still pretty good imo!

how come the 200tdi gets better milage then when its an older engine with no electrickery? Just proves that all this ecu stuff is total bollocks

The defender 300's don't have an ECU... but they do have an EGR and soem of 'em have a Cat.

Seriously... the biggest reason is the way it's driven. If you've got a little bit more power then you tend to use it.

The differences between a 200 and a 300 are, for all intents and purposes, negligible. I tend to drive mine in the highest gear I can and I change gear as soon as I can. I also lift my foot off the throttle as early as I can and use the brakes as little as I can. I rarely exceed 60mph and usually drive at between 50 and 55mph - indicated 56mph (gps corrected to 62mph) on the motorway seems to be the right speed for max economy.

Aerodynamics of the Defender are approximately the same as a pair of mating housebricks (males are slighty smaller than females) so speed is the greatest enemy of reasonable mpg there is. Second only is always flooring it between gears... half throttle isn't much different in terms of acceleration or performance but it makes a HOOJ difference to economy. In short... it's a landy... part of it's design remit was to hold up the reps and other c'unts that treat the Queen's highway like a racetrack, not to compete with them.

If you want an uneconomical 4x4 that still won't compete with a repmobile, but might make you think that it might... buy an X5 or a Caynenne. If you want to get decent mpg out of a Defender or Disco... slow down a bit and take your foot off early ;)

Ive clocked mine at 31.5 mpg befor, doing mostly motorway trips with some town driving and country driving. This is with a disco 200 and disco ratio T-box.

I used to be getting about 21-24 mpg with the old TD engine and defender ratios.

My old mans TD5 ushally gets about 28 mpg with defender ratios and a +30 hp chip, similar driving.

i think i get around the 35 mark, i can get to college for a gallon of fuel and that is 33.5 miles away, with a little fuelt to spare.
on the motorway i get to 5th as fast and possible, and then sit at the 55 to 60 mark.

I've been getting about 32 MPG out of my 300Tdi recently, friggin chuffed, thats the same as my Dad's eco freako volvo with a 2.0 diesel.

I've not worked mine out but going like for like distances and compared to my v6 vectra which does 30-31mpg, i'd say i'm probably about the same, if not slightly better.

Difference is the money gets me there a damned sight faster in the vec.

I should have mentioned that this is based on driving with a slightly heavy foot and around town, maybe 30 miles of motorway driving out of the 220 I calculated it from.

Bugger speed, its all about the journey, and stopping every now and again as bit fall off along the way.

Those of you getting into the 30's do you ever drive over 50 miles an hour? I may have to see if I have the patience to do an economy run at some point.

With 265 grabber at2's, spotlights ruining the aerodynamics a bit more, and normal driving up to 60 mph I have never bettered 25mpg. But for me normal accelleration is pretty much is foot on the deck, but not revving it hard. Otherwise It doesn't feel like I'll ever reach the target speed.

I get around 14mpg in my 300tdi. Simex jungle trekker 2s 33" normally sit at 60 on the dual carriageway. Has straight through pipe and egr blanked.
