the engine gearbox and transfer box are out of me mates defender 300 tdi at the mo,we was gonna rebuild it,but we had sourced a 200 tdi engine out of a range rover, problem is weve now been told the 200 engine wont fit the 300 chassis as the engine mounts are in a totally different place and will be an arse to sort out..is this right?....

Cut... Weld... not much to it... There are other things that need changed, tilting of the turbo or changing the bulkhead footwell a little to get the turbo/piping in.

The engine will sit slightly different to a stock fit 200tdi because the R380 gearbox will be the long bellhousing version.

The RR 200Tdi won't fit directly onto the R380 from the Defender. You will have to swap flywheel housings or remove a couple of studs and still a couple of new ones. Can't remember detail of top of my head, but I think you will find that there is a stud at 12 o'clock and a couple by the starter motor that do not have corresponding holes in the gearbox bell housing.

Easier to swap the flywheel housings... then everything lines up perfectly.

I had a 2.5NA hosuing on a 300tdi and vice-versa for a bit until I decided to go the drill and tap route on the 300tdi housing. Basically make the housing follow the gearbox.
