you expect pressing the clutch to give an indication they can be changed in situ by removing no 3 main bearing cap ,and ensuring steel backing side sits against the journal not the crank
Ok, so here's an update after finding the potential cause of the noise.
I Emptied the sump to find lovely clean (metal free oil), removed the sump, pump and ladder frame to check the end float and there was excessive play in the thrust washers. I examined the thrusts to find no wear at all and they were fitted correctly. After trying a few thicknesses of thrust washers I found a combination of .0025 & .005 gave the closest tolerance to the book. Rebuilt sump etc and filled with oil and ran up to temperature. Bloody noise still apparent.
I found the noise is in fact at crank speed not half speed as I originally thought. The noise is (as best as I can tell) coming from/being amplified by the crank pulley. The best way I can describe the sound is if you have a slide hammer and you tap it at the speed on the engine.
So any more suggestions very much welcome...

I would love to know if you ever solved this issue. I have an almost identical problem. I have just removed the camshaft and found some issues. Thanks!
Never got to the bottom of it. Still taps immediately on start up until the oil gets around (4-5seconds) then goes quiet until the oil is hot then it comes back. As I said before if I park on a hill (up or down) the noise goes... not got worse and not got better...yet

Must be the mysterious 200TDI “Tap-gate” issue.
Just found some flat spots on a cam follower roller and a flat spot on the camshaft where it fits into the front bearing. I’m convinced that’s the cause of my tapping noise.

That’s interesting because I had thought it may be something to do with a sticking follower being pushed down by the pushrod causing the tapping or something on those lines. The reason I think that is because after stripping and reassembling the engine I didn’t put the followers ets back in the same order they came out so potentially causing a problem?

Interesting theory, the stuck follower. I should know better on mine when I am able to get all the replacement parts.

To be honest that appears different to my sound (same speed/frequency but appears deeper to mine) plus mine is more audible standing at the front of the engine and the sound appears to be resonating from the crank pulley area however it is noticeable inside the cab too.
So I was right then, I knew I had to be just once since being on Landyzone
Might pay to update you thread in the engine section to help others in the future?

Nothing more annoying than spending ages researching something than to find the exact same issue you are looking for with no idea what the end result was and the thread is a few years old so good chance the guy is no longer a member.
Its pretty rare for a 200 to have camshaft issues, but now Ive said that they will drop like flies!

Have you had any joy figuring out what’s going on yet SL?
He has a couple of threads in the 200tdi engine section with pics of damaged cam+bush and mention of tappet wear
