Just had the top UJ replaced and the lower steering shaft seemed to fall apart ,is this normal or are these rubbers bonded to the metal do I require a new steering shaft .

The shaft is in two parts, the rubber should be bonded to one part, which then slides into the other. Looks fine in the photo. If the rubber wears too much you can get a bit of play at the wheel, but they should last a long time.

So it's normal for to be able to slide and come apart when removed ?
A picture of the shaft properly fitted.
