My 90 has been going strong for years now but the other day she was started to loose power. Over a couple of days it got worse and started to smoke quite a bit (black smoke).

I went through the usual checks and came up trumps except that 2 of the glo plugs were not heating. This i dont think is anything to do with it though, she still starts normal in the mornings but just doesnt have the power.

I took the lid off the water bottle and started it up and there was no pressure in the water bottle so didnt indicate a sylindar head problem.

One thing i did notice though waas when the engine runs if you take off the oil fillar cap she was blowing a fair bit. More than normal i would say.

Any ideas ? Is there any common faults in the 300TDI's that cause loss of power and really bad smoke ?????

Cheers

Sounds like it could be a boost or a turbo problem, as Ratty said a split or collapsed boost pipe would be the first thing I'd look for, along with any leaks or blockages in the system

Cheers lads for the replies.

What i have done so far is :-

1, change air and fuel filters = no difference
2, Removed and inspected turbo hoses. All seem ok, new looking.
3, put finger into turbo and checked. Seems to spin ok and bearings feel ok.
4, Removed and blanked gas recirc valve.

Still doing the same. Starting to annoy me now :frusty:

Just a thought here.

A couple of days before the problem started i reversed into a big rock snapping the tail pipe of the exhaust. If i damaged the cat could this cause this problem ?. Just cause when i remove the oil filler cap it seams to blow (no funny comments :p) i little more than usual ???

Have a very good look and see if you have kinked the exhaust pipe somewhere.

Kinked pipe could be blocking the exhaust and causing this bother.

Cheers lads. I will have a look in the morning. Might try wipping the exhaust off at the manifold see if this changes out !!.

A mate had the same symptoms a while back turned out his cat was all gummed up from using some dodgy "bio" diesel that had been made out of all sorts of old crap. Removed the cat and replaced it with a straight thru pipe and it was sorted.

I am convinced now that this is the problem. With me hitting that bolder its maybe dislodged rust and crap from within the cat and is restricting flow.:doh::doh:
