Dead Disco

Hello All
This is my first time on this site and i am trying to find my way about,but ineed some help please.I have a 1994 200tdi Disco that i am hoping to do up for some offroading with my sons.Up till now it has only moved off the drive to make way for my son to work on his car and has been no trouble,but this morning while moving it the Disco seemed to stall.Now there are no dash lights and seems to be no power to the starter motor.Central locking and imobilizer are working as are the lights,but at present it is stuck on the road outside my house.Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a bad earth

check the earth point from the starter motor to the chasis, best to get at this from underneath.
Then check the earth directly off the battery.

Remove the connections, clean and tighten back up.. slap some copperslip on.

Then I wonder why a mate with a Shogun, needs a new starter motor after every trip we do to the plains...
Plus... it takes me 10min to take the starter motor off my disco, on his Shogun he has to remove the whole exhaust..

anyway...back to the thread.

What happens when you turn the key?
can you hear anything? a click? does the starter motor spin?

as said above, check the earths... you might also want to wack the starter motor when you turn the key, might be the solenoid sticking.

I had the same problem on our TDi 200 and it turned out to be a faulty ignition switch.

Very easy job, buy new switch (I got mine from Paddocks, about £30), unplug old one, plug in new one and attach to ignition lock - JOB DONE

Take a small piece of wire or a screwdriver and short the main LIVE terminal on the starter to the little spade terminal (take the small wire off first) - make sure it is not in gear.

Does the starter turn over? If yes then the fault is obviously electrical BEFORE the starter, so ign. switch etc.

If the starter does not turn I would check the earth AND live connections are all good.

Then try starting it again.

If nothing then take the starter off and strip the solenoid, (you will need to unsolder the wires) you may find the contacts are shot (if you hear the click but no turning) you can clean them up and turn the plate over and that will solve that.

If the solenoid is not kicking you can get new ones or it may just need a clean - if you are not using it daily at the moment it is well worth trying to repair it, and they are easy thnigs to repair.

good seller though, sent me the money and said to not bother to send the starter motor back..
