My 90 wouldn't start this morning; cold must have got to it, ended up having to walk to work:mad:

Turned over once or twice and that was it; tried glowing for longer but it wouldnt turn at all in the end.

Is my battery dead? Or is it just the cold?

thanks

just the cold probably, batteries dunt like the cold, get a trickle charger on tonight when you get home and then check your alternator etc. for output

Thanks, have ordered a trickle charger but that wont come for a few days; will try leaving it inside overnight (the battery that is;)).

prolly not enough to put back in what starting took outta the battery
I'd say 3-5 miles back and forth to work 5 days a week; 15 miles back and forth on the motorway twice a week to pick up missus from work and some odd trips to the shops. That would be enough to keep it charged I would have thought:confused:

that mileage is enough to keep it charge. thats the kind of mileage i do and never had any probs. and its the prolly the same mileage that almost everyone living on Gozo(a very tiny island) does and ive never heard the battery doesnt get charged cos of the short trips. so its either cos of the cold, the battery needs changing or your alternator isnt charging..

No - general consensus is 20 miles to recharge a start - obviously that depends on engine type and how many attempts to start.

It's a 300tdi, normally starts in one or two attempts. I haven't had problems with it before and it was absolutely fine last night.
Will try leaving it inside overnight and hope that it starts tomorrow morning. Otherwise I'll have to way untill I get the charger.

Would it be worth buying a stronger battery? Maybe an Optima?

rubbish - how much juice does it take to start a nice warm engine (in Malta) compared to a frozen one here, that sounds like it doesn't start so well even in the warm ?

you're not comparing like for like

Is it parked outside?

If it's inside a garage, try a small oil fed heater around the vehicle near the battery, it'll stop the area dropping below zero and affecting it overnight

Rule of thumb is if a battery goes flat, then you're on the way to a knackered one as it won't regain it's ability to it's job 100% in the future.

Q1 How old's the battery?
Q2 What type & rating is the battery? Look at CCA rating as well as A/hr...
Q3 Have you looked at the electrolyte level? Is it within limits?

I could go on....

A decent rated battery should have no problem starting yer Landy.
My 19J is outside =COLD, 30seconds glow heat & starts first crank :)

:D:D:D
There are less coloured people in Malta too:D

You should see what its like here in Birmingham:rolleyes:

Its parked outside, have just got home and tried cranking it again but stil no luck.

I've just pulled it out and its a "Halfords 12V Calcium Car Battery HCB072" 550 amps: (is 550 enough???)
Halfords | Halfords Calcium Battery HCB072

I've decided I dont want to fart arse about trying to get this one working but will buy a new one instead.

Easiest thing for me would be to get the same one from Halfords as I'm only 5 minutes from the nearest Halfords. However I could order Varta Silver or a Bosch for around £75, but would have to wait for it to be delivered.
Any thoughts? What batteries do you guys use?

550cca is not enough. I use a 100Ah with 800cca's. Buy big, buy once.
