dead battery?

i just gone to start the car and it struugled to turn over, now the ign just clicks. i'm pretty sure batter is dead but any other thoughts?

Hi Gav.

The battery voltage will give you a rough guide to it's condition. It could be your Starter Motor/Solenoid or maybe the starter relay is shot and can't handle the current to pull the solenoid in. Another area to look is the fuse box in the engine bay for signs of scorching around the relays and especially the maxi fuses.
 
ive swapped a few relays around, i will check the battery in the am, if it starts with a jump then i'll start searching for a new battery!!

fingers crossed its not the fuse box!!
 
heated screen can stay on and also the wireless reciever issue, blown alt diode as well will flatten battery

Just had the same on my tractor, turned out to be the relay that operates the starter solenoid. The symptoms were like a flat battery, starter struggled to turn. Tried a new battery, no change, had the starter motor off and took it to a specialist, tested OK. I was stumped, put new heavy duty cables from battery to starter, still no change. Eventually found and changed the starter relay and bingo off it went. I am at a total loss as to why the relay should have produced this effect, it's not logical:confused:
 
'Tis though. Bad contacts on the relay = voltage drop = low volts to the solenoid. This pulls in but only weakly and doesn't make sufficiently good contact which = voltage drop again and starter not performing. Old minis were brilliant when they had the starter solenoid on the floor and you pushed it in with your thumb. You could get the same effect if you didn't push down hard enough. Does that show my age....??:rolleyes::)
 
burnt out brushes and worn bronze bushes cause slow cranking too

Car just died. No noise and gave gearbox issue. After researching, I ordered two new batteries as the other ones were dead. Now cranks but no start.
