hi folks, My freelander td4 with 80k is sick. Its dead, cant pull its self up hills and theres nothing but black reek behind. I replaced the airflow today and still the problem is here. anyone have any ideas ?

Earthling sorry to hear bout ya smokin gun, go to search ,type in, loss of power , think that will give you some clues. . . ming:)

My vehicle suffered similar fate. Lack of power diagnosed as a variable air nozzle (caused by turbine bearings going). Clouds of black reek diagnosed as oil getting into exhaust (caused by failure of seals at turbine bearing).

Seems the only cure is to replace the turbocharger but don't do it through Landrover unless your vehicle is still covered by warranty.

Find an independent specialising in landrovers and get him to diagnose problem (hopefully?) and give you a quote. Probably around £1,000 but could be up to 3 times more if you take it to the stealers.

hello

I agree with BABell but if you look under "Loss of power- new engine" you will see my experience. My thought is that the oil and smoke in exhuast is caused by the engine breathing, knackering the turbo etc. I would advise anyone to get the "cam cover breather filter " done first. A
new turbo might fix it for a while and get the car moving but the build up of oil and pressure will get it again in the end. Hope this helps, it took me months and heartache to get this fixed but touch wood everything is still OK.

The Merlinghnd is right on the button , in fact i would say any milage of say 40,k change that breather filter,no big deal for the cost, and dont go sticking ****e oil in stick to half or full synthetic, and on the diesels change ya oil and filter every 1 1/2 years no matter how low your milage. . .:)

One thing ive noticed is that its not burning any oil, and theres no oil loss from the engine what so ever. I will change the fuel, air and oil filters tomorow and see if it makes a difference. I changed the airflow meter and it helped with some of the smoke and it brought back a bit of power but its still not itself.

While you are under the bonnet, please remove all the inlet/turbo hoses and make sure they are not delaminating inside and restricting airflow. You say it is not using any oil,and the smoke is black.Black smoke is too much fuel or not enough air, because of the lack of performance yours sounds like not enough air.The way to check a bad AFM on a Td4 is to disconnect it,if its faulty the performance will be restored but it will smoke a bit.The right angled bit of hose just before the Egr valve is a favourite for collapsing.

Very good pointers from that last thread also ,Check to see if you have any gunge in your oil or pipes or breather's , this might sound daft but could be a big clue to bad engine breathing, if you have , then change the oil breather filter and run it for a few days [you have to clear out the ****e] and check results, and give feed back when youve got results , all the best . . .ming :)

Rite, so far ive changed the maf sensor, cleaned out the lift pump in the tank AGAIN and change the diesel filter. Went 400 times better, it could actually go above 50mph now lol but it still smokes and is still rather dead. Had a closer look and it appears the turbo hose is split, so i'll be replacing it. i'll do as said above and clean out all the pipes. Hopefully the end of the misery

Glen get this part ordered and changed its not that bad a job to do but if this filter is blocked it wont allow your engine to breath and will cause power problems and will make the car feel under powered.

L8510298 Valve Assembly £20.87

Its a cam cover breather filter.
