Hi

My mate ownes a 1997 300TDi manual thats done a genuine 80K miles. This vehicle has never missed a beat for him until today.

He had just driven 1/2 a mile maily up hill and it suddenly lost power, made a few strainge noises as if it was only running on a coupe of cylinders then died !

He managed to turn it round and free wheel back down the hill, attempting to bump start it with no joy.

Its now back in his garage, I have had a quick visual look and all seams okay. There is plenty of fuel in it and I have undone the fuel pipe from the output side of the fuel filter and there is loads of fuel when the key is turned.

I know its hard to pass comments without seeing the vehicle, but does anyone have any suggestions as to where we can start

if it turns over then i presume there's no combustion?

is there fuel getting in? if not then trace backwards from injectors to fuel tank. is there an air leak into the fuel system that has been exposed or made worse by going uphill?

is there air getting in? if no then check air pipes havent collapsed, the air filter is ok and not in a pile of paper in your inlet manifold. is the AFM ok, not blocked or knackered? wires ok to it?

after that im stuck but there the 1st things i'd be checking
 
could it be cambelt?

take the oil cap off and look inside, turn the ignition on key, if nothing inside moves.. the cambelt is gone.
 
newbury was kind of a give away. You, Daft, gotone and myself are not far from each other... we should organise a weekend of mudslinging soon. Sunny in east berks also btw.
 
hahaha, forgot Newbury was in there...lol

I go out almost every weekend to Salisbury..sometimes even during the week in the evening..
 
hmmm... interesting, the mrs was talking about making a mission to the circle of stones out that way... perhaps we could make it a bit of a muddier mission?
 
yeh sure.... we could arrange that.

Currently the guys that go out with me are off the road...one disco with snapped cambelt, one surf with a broken drive shaft, one shogun with a leaky steering fluid... the only one left is a Jimny...

but i let you know once we go out..
