Interested to read the info on here about the De-Catting of vehicles.

If I input my 5 penny worth.

My MOT'r advises that Diesels "CAT" is actualy a PARTICULATE FILTER and any diesel manufactured before March 2001 can have it removed. Otherwise if it isnt there or not working (ie BLOCKED) then it will fail the MOT.

Bugger! my D2 was registered October 2001, looks like my plan for a de-cat is down the pan :(

Nigel.

Petrol cars can have the CAT removed if they are operating on LPG for the most of their time on the road. Other wise they will also fail the MOT.

In my experience, the Diesel goes one hell of a lot better with out a particulate filter fitted as the exhaust path is more flow efficient. As your power is more availalbe then the upshot is, the ecomony is if anything improved. Also dump your EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recovery or Recirculation valve), this will has a massive effect too.

Hope that is of some use. :)
Diesle MOT only checks for smoke so you dont need a cat, a (DPF) diesle particulate filter is somthing completely different.
Petrol vehicles can get away with not having a cat if they are running LPG when presented for an MOT doesn't matter what it runs on any other time.
When i removed my EGR system i got 3mpg more which was good but also got rid of the low load shunting :D. The cat is the next to go :D

I cut my CAT out last night and welded a piece of spare exhaust in its place. Sounds a bit throatier but thats about it.
But can sell the CAT so made a bit of money.
Wanna get rid of the centre silencer aswell but need to find more exhaust first lol.

There is one between Just outside Braintree on the way to Witham. Its not easy to spot from the road though.

They open Saturday till 12.00 so is anyone want me to show them or I will try and get a google earth image up.

I also took an old reel of multicore cable I have had hanging around the garage and got £14.50 today, Gonna see what else I can find to scrap, metal seems to be fetching good cash at the moment. :)

Done the De-Cat with the help of Brian today, Thank you for your help.

At lest I had no problems of screws sticking and causing problems.... cam undone first time:).

It seems to have made a differance, on accerleration, the pick up is better and is faster, will find out about consumtion over the next couple of weeks, the sound from the exhuast seems nicer as well.

Has anyone else noticed a BIG change in the exhaust noise when fitting a De Cat? Asking as just had mine fitted (1995 300Tdi Disco) and gone from sounding "normal" to sounding like its got no exhaust as all now! So loud its unbelieveable! Is there some kinda silencer in the old unit and not in the new?

I can hear the Turbo whistle now but apart from that its sounds normal to me. I did put a complete new system on mind you.

You said you had it fitted have they done it properly? are you sure its not blowing at the join or on the manifold?

Unfortunately i think i might have to go to one of those High St chains to get them to have a look and see if it is what you suggested.

It was fitted by someone else and don't really wanna go back to them as they think its OK - 2nd opinion needed me thinks...

One other thing I forgot to mention is that the back box was removed before I bought it. I have it still. Could this be the cause of the problem? Before the de cat was fitting it was OK noise wise, in fact removing the back box didn't really make any difference - until now!

Thanks! I'll get the back box refitted, checked for blowing and see if that makes a difference... Hopefully it will...

No need for an emission test just a smoke test,my LR 2 failed on the smoke test, the garage ran the vehicle up and down the local dual carriageway flat out in 3rd gear, back to garage and a pass !!!what the fs that about ??

Hi Guys, thoughts please on de-cat pipe.Just how much noise and vibration is there with a Defender pipe fitted.Reason for asking, we are both nearly 70 ,love my Disco, will change the de-cat pipe but in the interests of harmony would i be better fitting the Disco pipe with flexi and without cat. Any Views.?

I fitted the solid (cheap) pipe and can honestly say i saw no difference in vibration etc. I can hear the turbo very slightly but thats about it.
