didnt you press accidentaly the mode switch? press it again to see what happens...if no joy move the transfer box lever in low and if the lamp will switch to M it means there's a short in the switch or it's circuit...we'll speak then

My S light was lit this morning, pressed sport and it went out, I assume I nudged it as I put it in gear.

then the switch is blocked closed or a short within it, untill you fix it, as long as you dont want to select sport or manual you can leave it so otherwise you'll drive in S mode all the time

there;s some throuble with that switch's circuit cos it must go to M automatically when you switch to low if the mode is selected, as long as it stays off with switch unplugged the problem is above the plug... also if your hi.low switch doesnt work well(and that's very common) selecting hi or low will not affect it much cos there's no signal, and the hi/low switch has no warning, you can check if it works only with tester

IMO there must be something as long as unplugged it doesnt happen, see the attachment, get a multimeter and check if you have earth on the pin of the selector module corresponding to pin 7 of the plug(blue/orange wire) ... concentrate to not mix pins...if you have earth there that's the problem, it means it's a short to earth within that circuit and the ECU goers automatically to sport and the hi/low switch doesnt work to make it go to M in low...if there's no earth on that pin but you get the S light anyway then IMO start to source another transmission ECU
RAVE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 44-5 said:
The cover incorporates lever position indicators and the mode switch. The lever position indicators illuminate to show
the position of the selector lever. Illumination is controlled by the Body Control Unit (BCU). The mode switch is a non-latching
hinged switch that, when pressed, connects an earth to the EAT ECU to request a change of mode.
