Hey guys...

Not been on for a while, but I've currently got a bit of a problem with the landy. What's up with it is that it simply won't drive with the centre differential open. When you try the front propshaft simply spins and you go nowhere.

So, I tried locking the centre diff and it drives forward and backwards perfectly. Obviously, I think this could be the halfshaft as it makes a nice little spinning sound when you try to drive, or it could be the front differential (please god no).

I'm wondering what the danger is in driving with the centre diff locked maybe 10 miles to a local garage to try and get it fixed?

I know that normally this is a no-no but if it is a busted half-shaft/diff it shouldn't put any unusual strain on the transmission should it?

Thanks,

Ash

depends whats gone and where if you get metal fragments in bearings/diff gears ect possibly a cv? Steering locking up? You could cause more problems but I have driven home about 20 miles with a broken front shaft diff end.
I changed the diff as the fragments marked the pinion teeth and crownwheel but it took me so much time removing the metal fragments from te axle tube and diff bango.

I've driven miles with the centre diff locked after blowing up rear diffs or propshaft donuts on a Disco.

The last episode was coming home from the plains, in front wheel drive (rear prop in the boot) and also towing another Disco which died completely when we were out, about a 40 mile trip

Seem to notice a lot more transmission backlash with center diff locked but drives ok otherwise.

The only thing I would agree with, is that you may have lots of loose metal fragments somewhere in your fronnt axle, an you certainly dont want them getting into the diff while driving. It can lock up the entire transmission instantly.......................

Don't ask how I know

If you can wait till weekend I can pop by and have a look at it, might be cheaper than a garage. I'm supposed to be in Sheffield area (Deepcar) sometime over the weekend ..

Aww damn. Thanks for the offer paul. If I'd of waited around would definately of taken you up.

But instead I went and drowned my sorrows of a broken landy in the best dives of Sheffield.
