Being the tight git I am and having just suffered a £200 fine from the nice vosa man, I've got a couple of quick questions;

I want an extra inch or more drop from my dampers, I can see a way of dropping the rear ones with a home made dropper plate but will 6mm plate be strong enough?

Anyone know a way of doing similar with the front? i.e, lowering the existing dampers slightly.

No problems welding & fabricating (used to do it for a living, was also a mechanic for a few years) so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Assuming your after extra travel just switch your shocks for a set of Terrafirma's, even the standard ones give an extra 2" travel over OEM. Much less hassle than moving mountings.

I saw a set of droppers foe sale at one of the shows, prolly Manby, and they were definitely 5mm or less thick ... dunno how thick they'd need to be, but I can't see 6mm being a problem .. but it's your vehicle, not mine .. ;)

We've just got a Renault Laguna for road use and to tow the caravan, so my Disco is now my toy .. MT's ASAP, but I'm also looking at using droppers, no money for stuff for awhile, and thinking along the same lines, I have 5mm plate and will look more closely at it when i get round to it. Mind, I also have 10mm plate and generally prefer over-engineering stuff .. ;)

Lol, I'm not alone after all.

Any ideas on the front though, not sure I fancy hacking the (can't think what they're called) witches hat with a damper up the middle - don't fancy hacking them about.

Decided it's more complicated than I thought but I've got a new plan involving extending the end furthest from the actual damper and dunking it in water sharpish to avoid any damage from the heat - which might work with front and back but I'll have a look-see.

Only thing is, do you think the dampers'll end up bottoming out before the springs if I do this?

As said, lowered shock turrets. Might also be able to raise the lower mounts at the front .. ;)

I've already got larger bump stops on, to stop the dampers bottoming out, so ready to go when i can get time ... ;)

mine's missing its bump stops at the back (mot fail?) but I've never noticed it bottom out, springs or dampers, 2" longer dampers might though.....

Interesting you state rear bump stops missing as an MOT fail because they're not a testable item. Had one missing on mine and was told because one was in place they will notice the missing one so took off the other, sailed though.

I used to work in an m.o.t place and thought they were required but wasn't 100% sure, hence the question, guess I'll have to get some then.

If anyone's interested, paddocks does them dropper plates for about £20-25 a pair. I'm gonna hack the ring at the top off (where the bush is) and weld an inch and a half of steel tube into it (as long as I've got some laying around). Will have to find a way of doing the front still though.

Right, all done! Will post pictures later or tomorow, used 25X25X3mm box 45mm long.

The top Half of the damper originally measured 285mm and now measures 325so I've gained 40mm, Still haven't looked at the front though.

I'd have thought just making a plate up to sit inside the turrets further down and welded in would work.

good point redhand, I'll see what I can alter anyway - might come down to changing something at the bottom.

PICCIES! :D

Dunno if they'll last or not, and before anyone says it I know I'm gonna need new bushes.
