Well still thinking its the head due to the white smoke from the exhaust but i'll check the rad first...

ill put 3 still wrapped cough sweets and glass of orange juice its the bit of gasket at the back piston by the baulkhead....

Well.................. thats everything drained and the head is off in an hour - so not too bad - looks like i caught it very early on, oil in the coolant but not lots and some water in the sump with the oil but again not lots and no white gunk. Took some pics and i'll put em up later - did notice some pitting round the water galleries on the head - but it looks like the head hasn't been skimmed before - so i'll try and get it to the engineering place tomorrow if they are open.....................

Erm no didn't think to take any pics of the gasket.................... anything jumping out at you from the head pics james??

was going to look at staining on the gasket ,looks like it was weeping between the cylinders on 2 at least but youve cleaned it

The gasket it round at my mates place where i took the head off - i'll try and get some pics up of the gasket in the next few days....

Is the oil feed/ drain anywhere near a waterway on these heads? Looks like the antifreeze hasn't been changed much.. is that pitting shallow enough to be removed with a skim?

no they can crack but its not that common

gosh ive seen far worse,the alfa heads i used to work on were far more damaged than that lol....:behindsofa:
that will be ok,i would refit the head as its off and be done.stem seals etc....i had to reface a valve as it was a bit out...
after that its good for another 100kmiles...
its worth checking the pistons too,i found a cracked 1 when i took the head off mine...

Yep i'll be replacing the valve stem oil seals and valve caps while the heads off - had a look at the pistons and they are in very good condition with cross hatch honing very visible in the bores. There aren't any wear ridges in the bores either - so it all looks good. The pitting looks to be bad but the head hasn't been skimmed before so i'm hoping that the head skim will remove it. Might give the valves a quick lap too when i remove the springs to change the seals. If it does turn out that the head is scrap i've still got the engine that it had in before so i could use the head off that - but won't know until its been tested.................

No idea mate - need to strip the head/turbo/injection pump off it but i am open to offers.................
