Hi guys
just want some info if possible, arrived home yesterday from towing my caravan, along the A roads up and down dale when the wife said there is steam coming out of the bonnet opened her up and the top hose had blown about a 4inch gash in the hose .I have now fitted a new one any idea what could have caused this as the temp gauge did not move stayed at half way on the journey all the time no overheating.

It could have been an old/faulty pipe or it could be the system is over-pressurising?

Have you checked the pipes for pressure since fitting the new one?

Wot he said ^^^^^^^^.

Take yer landy for a quick belt up and down the road and then pop the bonnet and squeeze the top hose. If it's rock solid then the system is overpressurising. If it still has plenty of give, The chances are the pipe had just gone weak. Keep the bleed screw from the old hose. Sods law says that one day you'll break or lose the one in the hose. Having a spare knocking about can get you out the deep stuff.

thanks guys for your reply all pipes are OK and the water level in expansion tank is OK not lost any water so far over a couple of days must have been a worn pipe .

good tip about the bleed valve though was going to throw it all away.
many thanks .

Look at where the coolant pipe runs close to the air con pump they rub on the pump union.

hi guys
i have run the disco now for a week after fitting the top hose no water loss at all in the coolant chamber did a ten mile trip on motorway no overheating on the gauge and the top hose is rock hard and very hot ,i can not figure out why its rock hard any more suggestions

The only three reasons I can think of for this pressurisation are:

1. Blowing headgasket
2. Air in the coling system.
3. Faulty/blocked header tank cap.

When you replaced the top hose did you thoroughly bleed the cooling system?

i think so just had it running on the drive for half hour coming back from shops hose rock hard ,so just undid the cap on the header tank no air presure came out screwed it back let it run until the pipe went a bit hard undid the top screw on the hose and let water out it was bubbling pipe went soft

Like thebiglad said, have you bled the system all the way.Lift the header tank up off its mountings as far as you can before unscrewing the bleed screw, air can be left in the system if you don't do this.just wondering if a faulty water pump would do this, maybe the pressure build up is due to heat expansion if the water pump is not circulating properly but only part circulating..Although past experience has resulted in a blown head gasket.

hi
do i lift the water bottle up while the engine is running and with the cap off or on .also might be a stupid question as new to land rovers were is the water pump to check that .

i have re bleed the system as per instructions by lifting the header tank up and the the pipe is still solid. I took it to local garage yesterday he said if the temp gauge is in the middle and not moving he said it is ok he also undid the expansion tank lid no air came out OR bubbling so his conclusion was everything was OK .
still not con viced after the amount of help given to me on this site could be gasket gone anyone know were i can take it to a garage in oldham or near who deal with landys and not get riped off .
cheers

there may be a clue in the OP... 'towing a caravan up and down dale!'

get it tested for a head gasket failure.

is it an early TD5, with stupid plastic head dowels?

hello guys

had enough now so booked it in for a head test on Tuesday so will let you know the out come asap hope its not to drastic of a result.

had the head gasket tested yesterday they said its blown quoted £880.00 plus vat well shocked for re skimming and repair using original land rover parts .
as i live in oldham anyone know were i can get it done cheaper

many thanks gaz

For that money you might be better going straight for a brand new head.

Turner Engineering do new heads made in Spain and supposed to be better than original LR ones.

Land Rover TD5 cylinder head LDF500170, LDF500160, 300TDI cylinder head, 2.0TCie Freelander cylinder head LDF107830L, 2.5 & 2.5TD new short engine assembly and cylinder head, STC 803, LDF109390L 1.8 Freelander petrol cylinder head, crankshafts 300TDI

guys
i have found a place to do the head great ,but then he we will send it off for xray (never herd of that) but it might have a fracture as well anyone heard of this happening as its going to cost £600.00 if he says its cracked its point less and needs a new engine.

As I said before if it was my car I would be putting a new Spanish head on it, then you KNOW you're done.
