hi all at first I had what felt like a loose wire between the key and the starter. but after some tinkering it got a whole lot worse I've got nothing at all no lights no nothing.
I've done a lot of work on the arches and footwell and pulled the harness through the bulkhead so every connection has been disturbed. so it's all back in now and it turned over but only when after a grope of the harness by the footwell. when turning the key I can hear the relay click in the footwell and in the fuse box under the bonnet. so I tinkered and it got worse I started to unscrew the fuse box AND.... grounded the frame to the harness and now it's dead. I checked all the fuses and found one blown so problem solved yeah? no

if anyone has any ideas and words of wisdom it would be very much appreciated thanks all

Did you check the square fusible links too? ... there are cases when simply eyeballing them is not relevant, check continuity to be 100% sure

yeah I pulled the battery out but but I still had it connected by jump leads dow☹ square fusable links right will check them thanks

ok all it looks like I'm not getting any power to the fuse box inside the car. the fuse box under the bonnet is fine though
by ideas guys

what about emobliser
ok my limited knowledge of electrical has told me to connect a battery to the car. then run a wire battery- to brown wires and if I get a spark I have power to that component. not the most cutting edge equipment I know but it's Sunday night 9:40 and I am getting power to the ignition so where to next

Then it's an interruption somewhere, make sure that the brown plug on the front RH side of the interior fusebox is well conncted and see if you have voltage on the brown wire

That's not what i asked... the power to that wire should come through the fusebox if the fusebox gets feed from the engine bay FL8, giving battery feed to that wire doesnt solve anything

the battery is in place and connected up in the disco so the brown wire is getting power from the fuse box I'm essentially using my piece of wire as a test light for continuity wow half 12 bet time lol

it's running I couldn't get a sparkly so I began to look at the earth points and the main earth from the battery to the frame and the engine was not connected to the frame it was just resting against it and me bridging the live to the frame was a red herring purely coincidental all's well that ends well
