cylinder behind rear wheel?

i'm looking to buy a 5 seat discovery 2 (S spec) everything looks fine but i noticed a cylinder or pump behind the rear right wheel, attached to the chassis near the damper. it was leaking fluid so now i'm trying to find out what it is so i know how much it'll be to replace.

if anyone knows what it is i'd be grateful for the knowledge.

i've looked on the internet, but obviously its a bit hard to find out when i dont know what it is.

what year is it? any pipes comin off it goin somewhere?

1999 s, 5 seats so no air suspension,

If its in front of the O/S/Rear wheel its likely to be the Sedementer for the fuel system,

its a fuel filter

bad news if its leaking? or not really?

Wrong it's the fuel sedimentor that seperates water from the diesel.

lots of people remove them as they're more trouble than they're worth and just connect the fuel pipe together

Could be......but untill we know the engine it's any bodies guess.

it is a fuel sedementer. it just looked damp and made a bit of a puddle on the floor while i was looking at it. the engines a td5. i guess it could just be a seal or something?
they dont sem to expensive to replace so i may as well just do that i think

no...

on the td5 it's the fuel filter. just nip it up or replace it. if it sucks in air here you will have starting problems.

Buy a new one for about £7... undo the electrical plug, unscrew the whole assembley. remove and clean the plastic electrical sensor off the bottom and screw it to the new one.
screw the new assembly back in place and nip it up.

then prime the fuel system like this:

Turn ignition on but dont start the engine, desk the throttle pedal 5 times quickly. the engine light will flash on the dash. when it stops flashing the fuel system is primed. crank the engine.

While it's priming check for leaks, the fuel here is under immense pressure... you will know if it leaking again!!!

the fuel filter you should consider to be a service item, just change it!

be carefull when you disconnect the electrical plug, it can break. once you got the sensor off the old filter, clean it up. also make sure that the sensor goes back on with the rubber washer.

One tip is to fill the new filter with new clean fuel before screwing it in place, this will cut the priming procedure time.

you'll probably need a strap wrench to do the job, if you not got one you can get them from ebay for just a few quid

i've only got a chain wrench. i might just take it to the land rover centre in huddersfield, they don't mind doing little things for a few quid.

a chain wrench will probably need the rear wheel off, a strap wrench on an extension bar you wont need to remove the wheel and will get at it from underneath or through the wheel arch if you put your suspension in off road mode. No need to take to to a garage, it's an easy 10 minute job!

make sure it's air tight or starting problems will follow...

it shoud come off buy hand land rover filters are expensive but a coopers one is less than a £10 but the fuel pipes do leak in that area and they cost about £50 + fitting

Use the leak as bargaining power as you are buying something that is needing attention, or get them to repair it first.

Wow, I wish I could be this confident. In my past experience, the only cheap thing about a Disco is the insurance. Maybe I'm negative but some inexpensive things lead onto more expensive things!

if your negative like that, no one would buy a land rover! its part of the fun...
im 20 so anything is cheaper than the insurance!
