cutting out

I have had a look through all the threads regarding my problem and carried out most of the suggestions but I still have the same problem.
The problem is the disco has been difficult to start, sometimes it starts straight away then the next time I have to keep turning the engine over and over until it starts I have fitted a new fuel pump and changed the fuel filter but still with the same problem.I have just fitted a new air bleed valve so I am hoping this clears my starting problem.But the main problem is that after a very short time driving the engine just cuts out with no spluttering or warning and to get it going again I have to keep cranking it over until it finally starts but yesterday it cut out and it just wouldn't start I got it going after almost draining the battery I am running out of ideas what to do next.Could faulty injector seals stop a running engine instantly or would it start to cough and splutter first. I haven't been able to drive disco since fitting the air bleed valve yet but is it possible that a faulty air bleed valve could cause a engine whilst being driven to just cut out
Would appreciate any ideas

is it a td5 manual? i take it you have checked the red plug on the injector loom for oil. also the starter motor connections needed a good clean up on mine. had pretty much the same problems and cleaning them 2 up helped for a bit. then i got the, air bleed valve and non return on the fuel filter and got the injector seals done. starts and drives properly now. but mine wasn't an instant cut out unless i was coming to a halt at a junction. maybe fuel pressure sensor related?

The first thing I did was change the injector loom I am pretty sure the problem is air related when I have to keep cranking the engine over to start it you get feeling that its purging the air out or trying to get fuel to the injectors!

do you let the pump do a full purge before cranking it over. i used to count to 45 after glowplug light went out. aint they great, just got mine running ok and the transfer box went on it.

Next time I am down in Devon we will have to get together and drown our sorrows that's assuming it doesn't break down on the way!!!!!!!!!

how good is you new fuel pump? is it an oe,good quality one as some of the very cheapo's give problems! also the fuel filter, the same can be said for that too!

I dont think its the fuel pump its not a cheapo £230 I have lifted the carpet up and can clearly hear it working ok also its not a cheap fuel filter.But I still keep thinking could it be the injector seals I have checked the oil and I dont think that there is diesel leaking out but if a seal has gone would this cause the engine to cut out instantly whilst driving the other thing I thought it could be is the fuel filter housing

when i changed my seals 1st time it drove for 14mile then give up, couldn't get it to start, towed it back home, new genuine seals and washers again and all was ok! god knows what or why, but thats what happened to mine,

Thanks I think that probably answers my question (can faulty injector seals stop a engine whilst driving and cause difficult starting) looks like my next step is changing seals !!!!!!!!!

yes in my case! driving along 60-65mph all power went, had to coast to a safe place to stop, then car would not start, i thought i had ran out of diesel, towed it to a fuel station, put diesel in, tried to start, white smoke frap etc, so give up as knew summat was up, didn't want to damage owt, so towed it home, my mate stripped it out, got new washers and seals (genuine) put it all back together, hey presto all ok, that was 16 month ago, we don't know what went wrong or if we did anything wrong, nothing to see on the seals or washers, did it same method and it's been good! keep us posted!

Update on my cutting out and starting problem,after changing the fuel pump,fuel filter and the fuel filter air bleed valve still had the same problem finally I got my garage to replace the injector seals and washers and adjust the injectors and eureka alls working perfect thanks for all your help and advice
