Right, our recently purchased 72 s3 petrol was cutting out when we came to stop at traffic/roundabouts etc.
I've replaced the plugs, points, condenser, ht leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and coil. I've cleaned out the glass bowl fuel filter which had loads of orange gunky stuff in the bottom, cleaned the air filter and changed the oil in it.
What I have noticed though is that it does it regardless of how fast I have the tickover (in an attempt to stop it) and, when I tried to adjust the mixture on the zenith carb, I was able to take out the adjuster screw without making any difference to the running of the engine. When the scrwe was out, there was a feint whistling noise coming from the hole. I've tried spraying carb/choke cleaner down the carb....but still it cuts out.
Is this a fooked carb or what? Totally baffled now.
The only thing I havent done yet is adjust the timing & valves but it runs smoothly and doesnt lack power so I figured they must be pretty good>

it mite be worth stripping and cleaning the carb, as one of the jets mite be blocked.
check that the vacuum advance is working ok too and the fuel filter (mounted on bulkhead?).

I feel sure this is a fuel / carburettor problem.

Take the carb OFF the car, and sit it on a clean sheet of newspaper on a bench. Clean it. Would you believe CARB CLEANER is good?

Now then, as the car is running well normally, what is probably wrong is the SLOW RUNNING JET being blocked.

Your mission (if you care to accept it) is to identify that jet and clear a lump of crap out of it.

Take the top half off it and try hard not to break the gasket.

Then carefully clean all the rest of the insides of the carb body.

Now re-fit that screw you been palying with. Screw it all the way in then 2½ turns out, and fit the carbytooter back on the car.

I suggest you fit one of those cheap see-through fuel filters in the petrol pipe close to the carb. This lets you see if crap is coming up and it stops it.

Thanks CharlesY, thats crystal clear instructions....just how I need them. I'll give that a go tomorow and let you know. many thanks, Paul

SORTED!!! Big thanks to you CharlesY for your advise/instructions. Carb was pretty gunked up but its all clear now and doesnt cut out. Perhaps now she will drive it, that way I can have an excuse to tinker.
The only other thing that bothers me now is that the overdrive is pretty noisey. I dont know if theres anything I can do to quieten it down, I'm sure I read on here somewhere that there was something you can put in the oil to stop it howling (apart from sawdust etc etc)
Thanks to all you fellas that gave advise, its much appreciated.
Ta, Paul

Great, so now that you know my advice is truly awesome and infallible, I advise you now to take the overdrive off and send it to me and I will look after it .... it's just what I am looking for to fit to my "new" lightweight toy!

If you can find some Molybdenum disulphide powder, toss a teaspoonful into the O/D. That may shut the noise up a lot, but if it doesn't start thinking about doing the bearings very soon before it damages gears.

Well, you nearly had me there, I was just tucking me trolley jack under me arm......then I read paragraph 2. Thats the kiddie I read something about, moly's denim disolving, or summit like that. Better get searching on tinternet to see where I can get me some of that. Knowing my luck though, you will probably only be able to buy it by the ton
Thanks once again for yer help.
