cutting into my 110 wheel arches - bad idea?

I'd reall like wheel arch lockers on my 110 van but don't want to change the external appearance. Have come up with a plan of having a Bucket type open topped box with a lip made up for me out of sheet metal to drop into a hole cut in the wheel arch and rivet it in place. Is this a bad idea?

ive got some ive not fitted yet that can be accessed from above as you describe as well as outside id sketch it up n have a word with an mot tester to en sure yer design works then do it

Great. Where did you get the ones where you can access from above. Probably cheaper "off the shelf".
