Suspected I might have some current leakage. Only thing that should be drawing anything when off was the clock, so unplugged that. So disconnected live off battery and checked current with an ammeter. A constant 0.23. Worked my way across the fuse box, taking out the fuses and checking current. Dropped to 0.02 when I took out the "spare". Turns out this is the clock feed, but also the radio feed. So even with clock disconnected the radio was pulling some. I guess it needs to (no radio lights or anything), but has a permanent feed for a reason but only seems to be to remember the stations!

Does 0.23 sound like a lot of current draw for a switched off radio? Is it a significant amount to drain battery?

PHP:
yes, if turned off.
disconnect the radio, see if the current drops.
if so, try another radio.

Completely agree. A quarter of an amp will kill your battery to the point of not starting your engine quite quickly. Ideally an off radio will draw less than 5micro amps. All it should be doing is keeping its internal RAM alive.
