Crunchy going into reverse gear!

My old Disco is a touch temperamental when selecting reverse. Strange thing is it doesn't happen every time! Somedays it slips in as sweet as anything but other days it just CCCRRRRRRRRRUUUNCHES into gear. I'm a bit of a Landy newbie so if this is a common complaint with Discos could someone let me know what's what please?

It's a 1991 TDi 2.5 litre.

Treat it like you hate it and it'll slip in first time every time .....

Mine started off with a crunchy reverse gear. I don't want to worry you but now all the gears are crunchy!

I've ordered new cluthc master/slave cylinders today so they'll get fitted at the weekend. If its not that then I'm going to go for a new pressure plate.

incidentally, the master cylinder has a rebuild kit available .... kinda points to a potential cure.

I'll let you know how things pan out.

There is no synchromesh on reverse gear, so if anything is still tyrning you get a crunch, try selecting 1st, keep foot on clutch fully then select reverse, synchro in 1st should stop everything making reverse gear selection easier.

try this.. push down on pedal all the way.; then release just enought to select 1st. now see how much further you have to release the pedal to get any forward motion..it should only be about 5mm at most any more and yer plate is on it way out

mine always crunches when i put it into reverse, but i am lazy and i don't press the clutch all the way down. its true there is no synchro on reverse, if you do it very gently and just tweak the revs as you are about to slip her into reverse it may ease the problem

If before you change into reverse, you slip it into first you should then be able to move it into reverse without the noise.

Try this, push the clutch to the deck, keep it down and turn on the engine and select reverse, does it crunch?

You could have a dodgey cylinder (master or slave or both) and the plate is not properly disengaging giving you some drag.

Edit - didn't noticfe the 1st - reverse trick had been mentioned. My mistake.

...and damage your gearbox in the process...

try putting it in 1st, then turning off the engine, then release the clutch, then re-engage the clutch, put it inot neutral, apply the handbrake, release the handrake, press the horn twice, get your missus to get out and push u backwards while you gently lean on the gear lever into reverse and watch it pop in sooooo smoothly you'll wonder why you ever tried it any other way!

Thats how i do my Disco, is there any other way?

My 1991 V8i does exactly the same thing. After some advice, when it crunches I select 2nd gear then it goes straight into reverse with no problems.
