Had this happen a few years ago, cant remember exactly what the cause was but eventually the wheel collapsed underneath the vehicle. Fortunately I was just pulling away at traffic lights, 10 minutes earlier I was doing 70mph. The creaking went on for 3 months before catastophic failure, get it checked asap.

my CV joint lasted about 10 mins after i noticed the noise going round a tight corner, nearly got home before i lost drive and had to use the centre diff lock
