Hi guys and gals,

Thanks Danny

think it was in discovery section but dunno what you drive cos you aint told us...

Creaking is caused by something juddering as it's moved. That means a joint that should move smoothly isn't. As the box is the most expensive bit start with everything else. You really want to get it up in the air and have some-one move the steering with some-one else listening and feeling each joint. You can try soaking a suspect joint with Plusgas or WD40 or similar to see if you an 'cure' it. If a good soaking of a joint stops the noise then don't stop there, replace that joint or item.

Cheers mate ill ask the mechanic to have a look at that when shes services in a couple of weeks.

No, unless you've got a bottomless wallet it's worth you having a look before it goes into a garage, otherwise how will you know whether the £700 bill the mechanic hands you should have been £70?

If nothing else, and it's just started since the cold weather has gone, get a hose and give it a good damn good soaking around all the steering linkages. If the noise goes away it's a joint or even a boot, even if it comes back when the item dries out.

Is it all worth it?
I don't know how much a steering box is for a Disco but I've just been quoted £1k for one on a Merc, supply only.

I replaced my steering box last week, it cost less than £200 recon from paddocks.

I also did the drag link joints at the same time as both had failed.

Garage was quoting £150+ for labour alone so I'm glad to saved that cash, it was not that hard to do either.

Standard Disco problem. The fluid flowing in the PAS hoses sets up a harmonic vibration. Not definite that thats your problem but both my Discos did it.
There is a service bulletin about it on the Rave manual somewhere.
If thats it then not a problem. Just annoying.
