Crankshaft sensor spacer.

raywin I said 0.513mm just over half a millimetre aprox 20 thousands of an inch.
Yes I saw, thanks for that, Now i know what the standard one is I will be looking through the garage tomorrow to try and find something to make one.
I understand the clearance from tip of sensor to flywheel should be 1.5 mm, I would like to measure up and calculate the gap with and without shimm, but it's a bit cold for messing about at the moment, so maybe something for next year.
I will just try with and without shim see how it works.
Not even 100% sure that it will cure the starting problem, just hope so.

When I was looking for a Defender and was the purchase viable for me I looked in depth at the cost of spare parts.
I was totally gobsmacked as how inexpensive everyday parts were (service parts and wear parts) you know the parts you would typically need to keep a Defender on the road. Ok I did not price them at a main dealer but from adverts in Land Rover mags and looking at the likes of John Craddock, Paddocks, MM4X4 and others on the internet.
Defender purchased and as you can imagine it was not long that I needed to replace something, Door seals because I was getting wet, off to one of the suppliers mentioned and two new door seals from Britpart in my sticky hands. Returned home to fit them could I make them fit and seal properly not on your life could I. Tried to return them but they were not having them saying they had sold many and never any returns just take care and they will be as good as the genuine ones or we could fit them for you (at a cost). Stuff this for a game of tin soldiers went to main dealer two new genuine seals fitted in no time and the doors shut easily and seal. Cost difference Britpart £12.18 for the two and LR £114.02 for the two.
In the coming months I purchased a number of things mainly Britpart I was not enamoured by the quality but the price was good.
In a very short time these replacement parts started to fail in what I believed was not a useful service life, Getting disillusioned with after market parts quality at the point I purchased a transfer box HI/LOW switch which was a blue box Britpart part and when I opened the box to fit it, it has fallen apart in its packaging. In a fit of temper I chucked it down the garden and said that's it no more after market parts only genuine.
I believe I have had to replace all the none genuine parts I fitted because they have failed except for door mirrors (but I did have to modify them to stop them vibrating).
You get what you pay for but it has made ownership a lot more expensive than I had budgeted for.

I do not profess to know what your problem is but I did have starting issues some time ago and it was contamination in the CKP sensor plug, just clean it inside and out it then starts easily. Oh and I see way you are saying about the 1.5mm gap at the tip not a spacer of 1.5mm sorry

Glad you are sorted, mine gave up suddenly on Saturday while standing on the drive with the engine ticking over, shook and coughed then quit.
I've been over the fuel system bled and purged over and over, no help.
Don't like hit and hope diagnostics but it seems the sensor is a killer and if it turns out it isn't that, then it's good to hold one as a spare.
I read the plug and wires can suffer from heat and age so will be checking and cleaning them at the same time.

Yes they do suffer, it is screened cable to stop stray signals.
You are wise to keep a spare as the CKP sensor has no backup, unlike the other sensors on the TD5 if the CKP sensor stops working the engine stops no limp home mode for that one.
You can check if you have a signal from the CKP at the ECU using a multi-meter. May be of some help.

I think island 4x4 possibly paddocks not sure tbh put on in the post for me.
Checked both and others today, all are similar in price, best as I said is Island
£4 + VAT + £5 postage, all of them work out roughly £10 give or take a bit, that's one of the reasons I am thinking of making one.
Try Googling it

I'm crossing my fingers, just want to hear it start again. When I crank it it coughs as if it is going to fire up, spits out a puff of grey brown smoke but that's it.
My thinking is it must be getting some fuel to make the smoke, but maybe it injects at the wrong point, maybe when it coughs it spins the flywheel a bit faster and the signal goes wild.
Hope so it's frustrating, if it works I am going to buy a new one as a spare.

i know the feeling mate, was doing the exact same outside a travel lodge in Salisbury!

You anywhere near South London/North Kent? Got diagnostics if you need em

Many thanks for the kind offer but I bought a Nanocom in a group buy which is helping a bit. at least mine is on the drive at home ( north yorks) I feel for you stuck outside a travel lodge, must be soul destroying, kind of makes you wonder why we hold them in such affection.
I had the rocker cover off Saturday afternoon wondering if the timing could have jumped somehow but chain looks OK, valves seemed fine.
If the sensor doesn't work I am going to pull out the injectors and see if there is anything visible.
when I spin it over there is no unusual or frightening just another TD5 ballache.

Yeah wasnt great! It eventually fired up the next day, i think it got wet, ran for 2 hours and died again!

Cant think of anything that would cause that unless maybe theres a chaff in the wireing?

we keep em because no one else will, and lets be honest, when everything is running right they are bloody cool :D

Stripped out the sensor today and tested it seems fine, BUT the cable was brittle and frayed, dam !
Getting to it to fix it is a nightmare. It must be fixed well don't want to pack up somewhere in the middle of nowhere, so in the end I actually took the manifold off to give me room to work.
Ordered some shrink sleeve, new plug and looking to get some screened cable. I found this on E-bay and sent them a picture of my plug they confirmed should be the same, by the way very good and helpful service from these people will confirm 100% match when I have fitted it.

Hi @raywin ,

You can buy premade wiring to replace the part that is known to get damaged.
an example. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/landrover...693883?hash=item3a83a46b7b:g:G6wAAOSw4shX5QxE

Cheers
Thanks Neilly, never saw that.
I have already ordered the plugs and sleeve, I want to use screened cable because I understand it can pick up signals from the starter, I tried to find silicon insulated wire its very flexible and heat resistant I am going to try Maplin see what they have.
I want to attach the new plug and then solder the cable to the old one I have stripped back then cover with silicon and shrink sleeve I'm getting a bit paranoid about it failing again.

Not sure why,

But on this website: the Defender TD5 does not have a spacer listed with the sensor. BUT the Disco does for use with the Manual as already stated.

Maybe a little mistake on the part of LR.

Cheers

On Land rover Microcat parts list, spacer NSJ000010 is listed for use with manual transmissions on both Defender and Discovery.

Took mine off today its a 2001 manual Defender and it did not have a spacer, possibly lost by some careless person in the past no sign of contact on the nose of the sensor,

This threads getting more informative as it goes along! Good to know about the wiring, let us know how it goes with the shielded cable, could be a worth while upgrade in the event of failure.

Will try and post some pictures, but it may be the weekend before its done feel I am hijacking this thread a bit now but it may be confusing if I start another.
Apologies to Tim 4X4
