Crank/damper pulley woodruff key

Can anyone confirm my fears..
This has snapped off the crankshaft??

After splashing out for the locking tool from difflock I've managed to torque it all up okay, but theres a lot of wobble on the damper which I'm sure with time will wear out the aux belt and tensioner

it hasnt snapped off as key is seperate part but has elongated key way in pulley and maybe crank

It hasn't snapped off, it should sit in a groove in the crankshaft and the damper and pulley slot over it. If it's from the timing gear do not run the engine as you will be looking at a re-build.

Thanks for quick replys it's from crankshaft so is only running v-belts, thus (as I understand) shouldn't be running anything timed.
I noticed, and as you can see in photo that damper has worn inside so hopefully the woodruff will still fit back on crank okay.
If so just means a new damper, slightly frustrating as bought this one new 6months ago due to buckling the old one trying to remove it!

Yep, but that would be behind timing belt case.
Based on the fact that the damper can be refitted at any rotational angle on the shaft I guess this is the key at fault?

do the job properly and get the timing belt cover off and see what damage has been done to the crank

Britpart by any chance? 6 months is about the useable life of some of their kit....Based on experience

most likely reason is pullet bolt not tight,key for belt pulley isnt behind case as it holding belt pulley,i would just check it to be sure

Last week I finally found the time to look at this.
Fitting a new key to the crank has left a deep groove on LHS.
Is this normal? I'm guessing not and the crank has worn away

No that's not good....get the timing case off and see what sort of state the second woodruff key is in.

Will check it but can't imagine why the timing pulley key would bs effected? Seems to be an issue from when I changed the buckled damper.

Based on above photo, do I need to replace the crank?!!

It usually happens when the crank shaft bolt isn't tightened up enough, and if that's the case then it's likely to have happened to the other woodruff key too. The only way you'll know is to take it all apart and have a good look. As for replacing crankshaft etc.....I'd worry about that later.

Thanks, although I can't help but worry about that now.
The engine has been running fine other than 'wobbly' damper. I shall check inside the case and if 2nd woodruff is okay check belt timing & re-tension.
My fear is having to take the engine out to replace crankshaft, I've already invested 18months fully restoring the disco including all welding, replacing brakes, gearbox, head recon, there's only so much more time I can spend on it!!

Well just wait and see...if the 2nd woodruff key is fine then you may get away with a repair to the outer one. Tbh a new crankshaft costs a helluva lot, would probably be cheaper to put a second hand engine in. But like I say, that's worse case scenario, you might find it's all ok once you get the timing case off. Chin up mate

if the key for the timing pulley is ok and your only looking at the slot fir the damper /vee belt pulley there are various fixes you could attempt with the existing crank.... im thinking aloud not recommending any particular one.... cuttin a new key way opposite the old one.... buildin up with weld and fillin out the slot, lengthening the slot to take a longer square section key, fit the pully and drill and tap a thread from the end, half in the shaft half in the pulley and inset a bolt and cut the head off.... drill the pulley hub radially tap a thread and inset a locking bolt..... drill right throuh and insert roll pin or 6 inch nail.....some sort of tab washer between the pulley and head of the crankshaft bolt or just weld the pully to the crankshaft..... ive worked in agriculture and have done all of the above at various times .
