A day in to range rover ownership, i love it !!! gave the interior a full hoover and clean and replenish today, its looking good

couple of questions please... is it possible to re set the trip computer display and reset the average mpg etc ?

also theres a black flick switch on the under steering trim panel to the right, what is this for ?

and with the air suspension.... anyone care to give me a quick run down of its operation , do i leave it on normal, if overnight or set it to the bottom one ? how about if for a few hours etc ?

i do have the owners folder thing, and when i have time (after its all cleaned and nice) il sit down with it and have a good read through and a fiddle and get familiar with everything

Hold the i button down on the indicator stalk for a few seconds to reset the values. But be warned if you've got a V8 and its showing over 15mpg I'd leave it alone, becoz if you reset and give it some beans or a lot of stop start stuff you are in for a shock. The only thing a P38 luvs more than breaking down is drinking fuel.

Not sure what the flick switch is.

Air suspension has 4 factory settings Access(I only use this for my granny) Motorway (lowers automatically from normal height after going more than 50mph for a period of time) Normal and Extended (for off road use) As long as you maintain all the components of the EAS I would use it as you wish. I do.

Use the lower button on the left hand stalk to scroll to Trip 2 then hold the button pressed until the display clears. That will reset the average MPG and the range. Trip 1 can be reset with the button on the next to the speedo.

Leave the EAS at normal height unless you have a very short missus. If you lower it the compressor has to work to pump it back up again which can only increase the wear.

Good idea to pour yourself a drink and sit down with the owners handbook.

thanks for the replies, thats cleared up , i wasnt sure if the eas had/should be lowered if left overnight etc

its a diesel showing 25.1 mpg at the moment, but older fella non motorway miles and used nipping around locally, il be doing longer trips and 60 mile round trips for work, so am i best resetting it and then seeing what it shows ? ie im hoping it will increase a little bit ? or just leave it and it will do that anyway ?

the flick switch....il take a pic tomorrow, along with some of the car, and post them up, insides done, want to give the outside a good clean 1st

When I'm in a hurry on A or B roads I lower the suspension to Highway and hold it there with the manual override switch - it acts as a sort of sport mode. Feels a lot tauter round the bends that way. Adds 10 mph to my corner speed before the car starts to feel too hussled.

Your life will never be the same again. ;) :welcome2:

I do the same. And I imagine an improvement in handling just the same too. :D I'm pretty certain though that's all it is, ie imaginary. The only thing it does is lower the centre of gravity and, in a rather far fetched way, improve the aerodynamics at speed by increasing air velocity through venturi effect under the car. It does not stiffen the spring rate or firm the damping or do anything at all of that sort.

There are no 'flick' switches as standard on a P38. All the switches operate through the BECM to do their thing. Have you got any extra lights fitted? It might even be that someone has fitted front fog lights but couldn't be bothered getting the correct switch fitted then 'turned on' in the BECM.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Range Rover ownership.

yes there are fornt fogs, land rover ones , they are wired to come on with the high beam and work, could it be so the switch is to just have them on and off whenever ?

il check in a bit when i go to work if the switch has owt to do with them

Lowering the car is effectively both stiffening the springs and increasing the damping rate, the higher the COG the more the car rolls because the increased height acts as longer lever pushing the car over and taking load off the inside wheels reducing grip. It's not imaginary pick an empty roundabout and lap it until the tyres squeal, put the car in highway mode and try again - you'll be surprised! ;)

As for life changing cars, I liked my Classic but never really loved it. I adore my P38. I really do.

so whats the p38 like compared ? ive always liked the classic but since i started looking for a new 4x4 didnt come across 1 single tdi diesel one within reasonable distance to view, i had a disco 300tdi ES in silver, which i never quite fell in love with, i really enjoyed owning it and served me well and never let me down or had fault occur, but just never quite loved the silver and ended up thinking green were by far better

im finding the p38 is superb compared, so much much better looks and feel and class, the bmw diesel engine is so much quieter and smoother than the disco tdi and not tractor like, i think im really going to love the p38 and so much comfort and luxury feel and feels a lot more sleeker on the road and less cumbersome than the disco, was hammering it down with rain and wind on way back from work just now and felt super and chuffed im all sorted just as winter really starts to come

The black flick switch sounds as if a homemade "hot start" button has been fitted, especially as you've mentioned it's location. My RR mechanic fitted one to mine. I'm not mechanically minded but I undersatnd that it essentially fires a bit more juice into the glow plugs from the battery, as it's wired directly to it, to help start when warm/hot. I don't need mine on cold mornings or when first starting, but holding it in for a few seconds when restarting or warm helps it fire up first time. A not uncommon fitment I believe.

Pretty similar to your findings, the P38 is a much better road car than the classic, better appointed and still very good off-road. A true master of all trades. The L322 IMHO is too big and blingy - I guess I'll own one when I have to (when P38s are just to old and unreliable) to me the P38 has the right balance, not too road or off-road biased, not too big or small and very smart looking onto the bargain. I'm not just saying that, I'm lucky enough to be able to afford any car I want (within reason) I wanted a P38.

i love it too, not been off road in it yet, but feels similr to the discovery, but more road going and so much better looking and more luxury feel to drive/in the cab, and the rear seats etc, all seems much nicer than the disco, boots still big , but not overly big/high like the disco, as i rareely had people in the back i felt disco just was too big a space wasted back there, i had a 5k budget and ended up spending 2250,under half of it, on a p38 thats all round superb, its not even one i think it needs this, that, that, etc, just 1 or 2 little bits thats all, and money saved and a car that i think il really love over time , as im more road going than off road or anything, its mainly for winter for work and to get about in conditions i dont want to put my classic cars through, and this suits all my needs and just feels right, and looks the absoloute business
