Having recently discovered a weeping, well a tad more than that, core plug, I set about undoing the inlet manifold etc. I then got to the point where I pondered. Is it best to remove the 4 bolts that attach the exhaust manifold to the turbo unit, or the whole unit into the exhaust. I know thought I, the forum would have the best idea. I don't fancy shearing anything, as is the want with exhaust bolts and nuts.
Any advice would be appreciated,. Thanks

That was my gut feeling thanks. Oil pipe disconnect at block seems a better bet, too although it looks awkward. I'm guessing rule of thumb is leave turbo housing etc well alone?

yes as you say pipes at block and leave turbo bolts well a lone they tend to shear ,a little loctite is good for core plugs and tap in slightly below flush

A better bet than the usual blue gasket stuff then. I used a tad of this on my Rover V8 but if you consider it a better option. Pesky bloody core plugs. I reckon I will do the set as I bought 3 of them.

Thanks again.

very much so non setting sealants can allow them to pop out ,acts as a lubricant

What about perma tex gasket sealent the gray/black sticky stuff? Have used that with success after cleaning the hole with a wire wheel on a drill putting it in the hole setting plug with right size socket and the 3 center punches to set them.:D

Okay, having just got back to doing this I'm wondering again. Firstly, the oil unions at the block. Buggers to get to, although I am guessing that if you can lever the manifold forward it makes it easier. That brings me to my second issue. Having been advised above (I can see why) to leave the bolts in the turbo well alone, I undid the exhaust clip on the down pipe to the exhaust. Or so I thought. I expected it to be a flange but it seems to be a sleeve fit. Is this right? If so any thoughts on how to loosen? It's a bugger that the actual core plugs are relatively straight forward to do once you can get to them.
