The 300 tdi engine (and others too I guess) has a plastic plug in the top of the radiator and another in the thermostat housing. These plugs allow you to purge air from the cooling system, they are however rubbish, they are prone to breaking off and the heads easily become damaged.

The solution is to replace them with metal plugs, handily they are the same size as the bleed valves/plugs in domestic central heating radiators (1/2" BSP)

Yesterday I visited my local Toolstation store a picked up two for a total of £1.07
