Hello
Freelander 2001 td4
Right I am losing a small amount of coolant, cant find any external leaks and no signs of hgf.
Some things that I am unsure should be happening.

  • Coolant is coming straight back into the expansion tank from start up. isn't it only supposed to come back into the tank once it reaches running temp?
  • Cant get the fans to come on at all no matter how much "strain" I put on the engine(turning all electrical stuff on inc heated seats.
  • When I turn air-con on the fans only go slow, even air con engineer commented on how slow they were when he re gassed it.
  • pressure cracks on top of expansion tank and after a long run I can remove the expansion tank cap with hardly any pressure on it at all.
So what I am wondering is the coolant loss likely due to it boiling/evaporating because its not under pressure? but if it was boiling wouldn't the temp gauge move above normal running temperature(which it never has) and also if it was boiling that much wouldn't the fans be kicking in full pelt to try and cool it down?
If so is it likely not under pressure due to cracks in tank or faulty cap?

Any ideas/help appreciated

Welcom Gav!

just above yer head there a box wi "search thread" on it, try typin in coolant loss or cooling fans and have a shuft thro it , should be summat there to help you out !;)

REPLACE THE COOLANT TANK AND CAP!

Thanks for the replys will change coolant tank and cap and see if it works.

Checked through searched threads by the way

If there's no pressure in the system, then the water will "boil" at 100 deg, which won't show up as hot on the temperature gauge. If the system is pressurised, the water won't boil till 125 - 130 deg, which corresponds with the Hot reading on the guage.

Thanks for clearing that up Treworgey

Gonna order the new tank and cap tomorrow. There is a new type of tank that has replaced the other on the Freelanders so they must have had some problems with them. New part number is PCF000012 replacing PCF101360.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the new bottles have some sort of sensor attached to them so I guess I'm gonna have to get that as well to block the hole off:(

Has anyone else fitted the new type tank?

fitted one to my petrol one a few weeks ago. tank is same shape as old one. lid is different. it's on a ratchet so you cant over tighten it.

the new tank has a "low water level" sensor - a must-have fur any hippoo!
unfortunately i think it is a diff shape and cannot be retrofitted - other posts have pictures n stuff. If yu can fit it - do so - but let us know what is involved :D

Just fitted a new tank and cap to mine last night.

The original tank and cap have been superceded.

the new tank is a slightly different shape and as previously stated the cap now has a rachet.

All connections are the same - ie no sensor plug hole.

By the way dont know if its right or not but mine also puts water back into expansion tank from start up.

Pick mine up today
Did the new tank and cap sort your problem out?

Gav

depends what you mean by problem !!

My problem was that after using the car I alway got a smeel of hot coolant outside even though no leaks were evident.

Yes, it has cured that.

As yours does it still circulates water back into the tank from startup but dont know if that is a problem ???

So far ive not been able to get my fans to come on and my temp gauge never rises above half way.

Also noticed that the really big pipe at the front of the engine seems to pressurise but never seems to get hot (well not when its left on tickover anyway)

Chris

I believe the coolant returning to tank is a problem, but not sure if it is due to gases in coolant or not - lets just say i got rid of mine when it started doing it again.:(

I aint sayin it is - just yu get paranoiac after a while - yu see ££££ signs sometimes unnecessarily - I just couldn't take the hassle after £6500 in a year.

well i think ill put of the VCU till I sort this out.

At the moment its running spot on - Ill have to check on some other XEDis see what they do

see reply from LR online

"It's normal for the system to cycle coolant through the header tank so worry if it stops!

Not sure which large pipe you are refering to but if its the larger one out of the header tank, it will not normally get hot as there is such a low flow rate through the header tank and such a large volume relatively to warm up.

If the guage is reading normally and you are not losing coolant, don't worry.

mine was loosing water, It cured mine! My fans never come on and the temp never goes above halfway. I've done over 50k in mine too! Mine also recircs to the tank on start up. Would be worried if it dint!

Fitted new tank and cap yesterday so I will keep my eye on the fluid level.

New tank was pn pcf000012 and old tank was pcf000009

The new tank has a bigger cap that is on a ratchet.

The new one cost £25+vat but included the cap, what did you lot pay?
