Coolant level

Morning!

When I bought the RR a fortnight ago I noticed the coolant level was a little low. Still water in the filling tank, but down to the bottom half of the lower level.

Promtly topped it up.

2 weeks later I notice that the level has dropped back down to the same level as previous.:confused:

No over heating problems as of yet. The temp guage in the car reads fine and have driven London to Devon at the weekend with no probs.

There isn't a puddle of water on the drive in the mornings.

The collant level is low but doesn't seem to get any lower.

Any thoughts - should I worry?

Mine does EXACTLY the same, i bought it in january and thought aaarg when i noticed she kept losing it, but never overheats, runs fine, no puddles as you say so i duno where it goes, hoping nothings majorly wrong but i've been trundling around since january and its never missed a beat
 
You could top up with one of these specialised products made to seal cooling systems....there is one on ebay from a specialised distributor costs about £10, you can just add it to the coolant and do not have to drain the system first, but when / if you do drain, you need to replace it, so its semi-permanent, not permanent. Its one of the ceramic products that plug up hairline type cracks and leaks. Coolant will inevitably eventually need topping up as steam will find its way past the cap to some degree as the cap gets older and very minor leaks elsewhere in the system can all add up eventually to a biggish loss which will cause overheating unless you are vigilant. I think some of these products can be quite useful in elderly and aging cars and have just bought some to add to my Rangies header tank as there is a gradual coolant loss there over time as well.
 
I think there is a tendency amongst P38 Owners to become so anxious that they catastrophise every single thing into a head gasket or cracked block......while coolant levels can def fluctuate due to head gasket problems, they can also do so for far less problematic reasons like escape of steam past aging cap / pipe joins with very minor leaks, radiator minor leaks etc etc etc. My Rangie had the heads redone about 18 months ago, and not because it failed in any way, but we identified a leak on one of the heads so redid them. Performance is great, its 10 years old and uses a bit of oil and I top up the coolant from time to time, but hey, its an aging, ancient car by 2009 standards and doing darn well, I think. Try the simpler solutions re topping up coolant levels before immediately making it into "oh my gawd its the heads" disaster - it quite probably is not, at least not right now!! BOB is right in saying that the heads will have to be done at some stage.......just depends when !!!
 
Hi i had the same problem last may so i bought some k-seal of flea bay put it in and know problem since, i also tow a twin axle caravan, i am not saying it will work on yours but its worth a try.

nah it's great,

especially when you have the rad off because its blowing the hose off, pour boiling water out of a kettle in. feel down the rad and find out the bastard k ****e has blocked the bastard totally. £10 to buy, 5 mins to put in, £160 for a new rad + ****ing about trying to get the crap out of the engine:rolleyes:
 
Strange - having used this product and others over the years in a number of old cars, I certainly haven't had the catastrophic experiences of gegs88. If they were all such useless and dangerous products I'm sure the companies would have gone out of business by now or would have been subject to loads of litigation re all the damaged engines, and been forced out of business that way.
Each to their own and no need to rubbish the opinions of others!!! Buy new caps and replace the entire cooling system and hoses if that's what you want to do; however, loads of people use these stop-leak products and they work for them.

Of course, cooling systems DO need to be topped up from time to time - some people think that they never have to do that ever, nor do they see the need to top up the oil levels either. Funny how these are the cars that often seem to develop problems then......
 
sorry if i upset you all i was saying was best to find problem i to have used stuff over the years but never befor looking for problem first. as everybody know v8 is not got best cooling in the world in future i will mind my own bissness

Everyone should be able to ask away and get helpful (and friendly) responses.....clearly, though there are people here who take great pleasure at making derisive (and sometimes obnoxious) comments about opinions expressed ......it really isn't necessary or helpful. :eek::eek: If products like the ones mentioned were so damaging then it would be a Trading Standards issue if all the products did was wreck engines, :doh:as there would be problems under the Trade Description Act. I appreciate not everyone likes them, and we're all entitled to our own opinions, but no-one has to be rubbished by some t**t wanting to raise cheap laughs or express a different opinion....... we're all entitled to agree or disagree, but just because you disagree doesn't mean you need to rubbish someone elses opinion.....:cool::der:
 
first i am not some **** 2nd i did not rubbish anybody if you took as much time reading what i said it better to find problem than just put stuff in and if you must put stuff in put good stuff that land rover recomend now all you have to do is find it

:confused::confused::confused: The remarks were directed at gegs88 sarcastic comments, if you read the thread correctly, but if you wish to re-direct them to you, then so be it!!. And I don't think that "what Land Rover recommend" is necessarily the way a lot of people here would accept as the best way to deal with anything!! If we all did "what Land Rover recommend" we'd all be forking out £1000's of pounds frequently to idiot main stealers whose sole aim is to fleece you and rip you off of every penny !!!! You only have to check posts now and then to hear sorry stories of Land Rover dealer rip-offs.

Lots of people are very happy with the additives. You and others obviously aren't. Live and let live. Who cares "what Land Rover recommends"?? They certainly don't have our interests at heart I can assure you!!!!:eek:

nothing sarcastic in my comments mate, maybe ironic because i have done the whole k seal thing and learned the lessons....someone asks for opinions but if they don't line up with yours they are wrong.nice
 
neither Geggs or I were being sarcastic.

I (and I assume Geggs) have had enuff experience of this stuff causing major problems - OK not every time. If yu wish to use it, go ahead - its your money and your motor - but you have been forewarned. If it blocks your rad or an engine waterway, dont come crying back here.
As stated, better to find a fault and cure it, rather than mask the symptoms.
