Coolant leak when cold

Hi Folks,
I have looked through the threads but can only find info about coolant leaks from a hot engine. My Freelander 1.8 petrol just has to be different - I lose coolant only when the engine is cold! I can drive all day with no coolant loss - but in the morning the reservoir is often empty, sometime half empty and occasionally no loss at all. The coolant is always on the ground below the pump area when lost. It made no difference when I drove it or left it standing overnight with the reservoir cap off. I put it in the garage and as there was a water stain running down the water pump the pump was replaced - and the cam belt - but it has not cured the problem. I would like to make a suggestion to the mechanic about what the problem might be - can anybody help please?
P.S. The anti-freeze is getting a bit costly!!

Hmmmm very strange! Have you eliminated the inlet manifold gasket from suspicion? It seems unlikely that a new pump would leak in exactly the same way unless your block has a defect in it.

Chasing down leaks in the 1.8's cooling system takes forever. In the end I stripped everything but and rebuilt it using an electric water pump - and I STILL lose some :mad:! Although I think I know where from and I just need to find some time to plug the crack in the radiator hose connector.

But yes, make sure the inlet gasket is ok first.
 
it could be a crack some where in a metal componant as this would expand with heat and probably close the gap but when cold it would be open , but this is only a suggestion .
 
Mine looses it when cold (max to min about every 300 miles) but I've been told its more than likely from the inlet manifold into the number three cylinder. There's a misfire logged on the ecu and I get a slight 'lumpyness' for a few seconds on start up. I was told to replace and silicone the gasket but I haven't got round to it yet :rolleyes:
 
while you're in there, knock out the little ball bearing in the jiggle valve.

trust me it'll save you grief further down the line. :)
 
right what is this jiggle valve and what does it do? Is it only on K series? I hear lots about it but not quite sure what it is?
 
It's the little ball bearing that sits in the top of the thermostat. If you knock it out it will help with coolant circulation and help prevent over pressurisation of the cooling system, which contributes to good old blown head gasket scenario on the k series......

what freelander is your bushwacker 1800 or td4 or v6
 
Hi folks - I've returned just to let you know that good old Radweld found the leak for me, sealed it and I haven't lost a drop of coolant since in over six weeks!

Oh dear. Fingers crossed you'll get away with putting liquid head gaket failure in your coolant. Otherwise you better start saving :(.

Yeh that was an absolute **** take, that garage needs trading standards up its arse. If they'd done that to me and then you'd found that tons of the work hadn't been done I'd be all over them like a rash :mad:. This is why the motor trade is in shambles!
 
ive used radweld, dog turds, bars leaks on most of my cars over 40 odd years for small leaks, never ever had a head gasket go,tried that kseal stuff once did not block a leaking core plug, bars leaks did. i think people try to worry to much after listening to people who have not used it,for small leaks it can save pounds,never ever has it clogged up a waterway,

Have you used it in a K series? There must be a reason why so many people say don't do it :).

It's better to find and correct leaks properly.
