Coolant leak when cold

what freelander is your bushwacker 1800 or td4 or v6

Mines an 1800 on a 1A vin number.
Had a barsteward of a miss fire on Saturday after it'd been parked facing downhill for two days, (normally there's a slight lumpiness for maybe 20 seconds at most). It was ok after a few minutes but it was the worst I've had since I got it.

no never had one, its finding the small leaks that involves loads of work, like the guy did, bit of radweld job done,
you carry on using it and we'll carry on avoiding it by mending the causes of the leak :)

do not under any circumstances use radweld in a K-Series or it will block something critical.

It's the little ball bearing that sits in the top of the thermostat. If you knock it out it will help with coolant circulation and help prevent over pressurisation of the cooling system, which contributes to good old blown head gasket scenario on the k series......
no not that one

the one in the inlet manifold itself

A recent experience has changed my whole attitude to chemical leak sealer products, this is what the underside of my cylinder head looked like after chemical leak sealers were used : Leak Sealer blockage of Cylinder Head 1.8K Freelander - YouTube
Leak sealers, for a short time, worked for me, but they blocked the tiny pencil type diameter coolant passages of the cylinder head as the above video highlights.
If the leak is coming from your head gasket area, do the job once + do it right and renew the oil rail and head gasket at same time and use Hylomar sealant.
1.8K Freelander Head Gasket Renewal and Overheating Fix - YouTube

my wife's freelander played up lie this one ,and I suddenly noticed a drop of water coming of the header tank .I had a good look at it and all around the top of the header tank were small cracks , I replaced it and not more water loss.

Mine is still loosing a bit of water on short journeys. I can loose a tankful in a week of tooing and froing but I can do a 500 mile trip and not use any at all.

I get a bit of a whiff of coolant every now and then, but still gradually eliminating problems. Next coolant one to sort is the heater pipes as they have been oil contaminated in the past. As I had to chop the end off where it joins the head by the coil.

Mine was losing a little through the heater matrix. Smelled sweet in the car and there was condensation after the car had warmed up.

New heater matrix and no problems since.

Interestingly, the original heater matrix in some of the 1.8s seemed to have been a weak point, as, when I bought my black 1.8 a few years ago, the chap I got it off bypassed the heater core and conceded it was leaking. I replaced it and no leaks since... Interestingly, a few weeks ago when I did the HG project on my 1.8, I renewed the heater matrix (yes, second time, lol!) as the mistake i made was to use leak sealing chemical in the cooling system... never again!! No matter how many times i fliushed the heater matrix and radiator.. tiny traces of the leak sealer would keep reemerging, so i just renewed it... sure it's a 5 or 6 hour job, but i'd rather that then continue to fight a losing battle. As part of the project, i also renewed the radiator and the metal coolant pipe at rear of engine, and now, my 1.8 has never been happier! :) On it's KV6 brother, I also renewed the radiator + heater matrix as i bought this one in 2013 where the oil and previous coolant had mixed, and rather than trying to clean all that gunk out of the system, it's simply easier to renew some components.

Epicuser, assuming you have a 1.8, as long as it's not leaking from the head gasket area down the engine block.. Then I suppose temperatures over there don't get even close to how hot they get here in Australia, that's why I did the last HG job properly and used Hylomar sealant and renewed the oil rail.

Btw something else that's never happened before this work, is, now, the Freelander cooling fans at front are never coming on at all.. I can claim that my location Australia is a lot hotter than the 1.8's birth place, but last weekend, I took it on a 1 hour trip to Centennial Park, including 1 point of 10 minute stuck in traffic jams, it was about 25-26 degrees C, and still no fans coming on! I purposely opened my windows and did not want to use the A/C as i wanted to see if the computer will turn the fans on to cool the engine.... and noo! As it don't have to, the radiator itself and coolant are doing that job mightly darn well..! The temperature needle remains at the half way mark. No annoying gurgling sound anymore near the heater matrix area when i start the Freelander up (no air trapped in cooling system and no leaks). Engine quieter than ever before... Wait till summer comes along here... when it's 35 to 40 degrees C days, I'll take it on the most punishing runs... and there'll purposely be no A/C switched on, to see if it can handle... I'm still buzzed by the normal way my 1.8 now behaves...!

If I won a sizeable lotto fortune of greater than $500,000, the first thing I'd do is purchase a house with a 3 or 4 car garage then buy cheap 1.8s and repair the head gasket issue then sell... like a 1.8 Freelander rescue..! They really are quite amazing to drive after this work. My engine's never been this quiet as now even above 100km/h on the motorways in 5th gear on the PG1 box.
