Continuing problems Freelander 2!

Hi, thought i'd update you all on my similar problems. My wife heard a whining noise from the steering and yes it's the same problem you've all seen.

Took it into Landrover who kindly noted that it needs a new steering rack at a cost of £1,500.....

As my car is an 07 it's 8-9 months out of it's warranty and whilst spoke many times to Landrover they don't want to support any of the cost, therefore if you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated !!

read post 37 and then start constructing emails ,letters to land rover, if you can quote dates you spoke to dealer before warranty ran out , so much the better, but be firm about it being a known problem, and good luck!

HI thought i'd update you.

The team at Landrover have pulled out all the stops and whilst even though our car is 9 months outside the warranty period, they funded the full repair of our steering rack.

They quoted this was possible due to a full service history from a Landrover dealership, but as you can imagine we are extremly pleased with the service we've received.

We're looking to swap our car in 2011 and most definetly it will be a Land Rover product.

I am front wheel drive motorist 'ford focus', i am looking at buying into the four wheel drive market 'freelander2', my daughter bought a pony and it needs taking to shows hence my interest in Landyzone, i am really put off though by the horror stories of steering racks and pumps, i have had 10yrs totally trouble free and cannot imagine putting up with the headache of fighting dealerships for poor design / workmanship at factory level, now considering honda crv although they have problems of their own.
It will take some serious convincing from a dealer to make me buy into a Freelander, surely LR need the UK market to support them, not push them out of the country all together.

Forums offer a lot of help and information. The problem with them is the majority of the threads are started about faults. Something broken or faulty. Hence anyone reading them won’t hear of the thousands of happy owners, who’s motors a relatively trouble free.

Often on forums we give advise which comes from knowledge built up from our own experiences, or what we know of from others. Most of the advice will start with checking the basic things, known faults etc. All cars have these. In the land rover world there’s a lot of diy mechanics, and a lot of product knowledge exchanged by owners. All cars have faults. You may have been lucky with your Ford. I was so lucky when I had mine. Freelanders been just as bad.

Many of the owners have years of trouble free motoring - only the few who have had issues will be posting online.
The good experiences with dealers also will get very little publicity, the bad experiences rightly get the publicity they deserve.
For example mine has just been in for a belt tensioner fault, while it was there the rack, pump and reservoir was changed as the dealer noticed the rack was notchy - it would most likely have lasted the remaining few months of the warranty, but as he said, why sully LR's name by dissappointing owners?

Hi all. I am a new member. Purchased an 08 Freelander 2 commercial from a LR dealer with 200 miles on the clock. Now got 15000 and until last week not a single problem.The steering failed and was transported to the dealership. There was two weeks left on the warrenty (what luck). They are replacing the rack and tank and flushing the system. Seems the pump is ok. Told by dealership that the new parts are modified from the original? and that it is a `rare` fault. Asked about the warranty on the new parts and told it expires in two weeks with the car. However if there is a problem after they will approach LR and try and get a contribution.

its the crap that blocks the filter in the tank and starves the pump of oil, which hydraulic pumps hate,

I have a freelander 2 2006 2.2 manual. On several occasions it has failed to start when depressing the clutch and pressing the button, ignition comes on and get a feint clicking in passenger footwell area ( sounds like a relay ). I have had it into the agents and they did the old software download for £130 several months later it did it again. I have disconnected the battery etc without success at starting. I eventually called green flag out the other day. He checked the battery - fine he checked the fuses etc etc. Eventually he had a go at starting it. Depressed the clutch and pressed the button - NOTHING. He then pressed the brake as well and it started straight away and has done so ever since. Have i got a manual freelander that thinks it is an automatic??? Have phoned 2 aagents and they do not understand it. Any thoughts???????

Is there a switch on the cluch pedal? Could it be the brake pedal switch? Are these used to indicate "safe to start"? If thats what fixed it, could it be linked?

Hello, I would like to know where do you send letters to, I have FL2 ran out of warranty for 3 months, and now this problem comes up. But I am not from UK, I am from Latvia, and I have been always using Official Dealer for repairs... Is there any way they could compensate the steering rack?

3 months out of warrenty, i think you should get 75% of parts costs contribution.



Though this is from my experiences with Land Rover UK and i have no experience of overseas policies.

If all else fails, kick up a well mannered storm to Land Rover Customer Services.

Thanks! I will try what I can, will write up the letter now, they quoted me £1600 -25% ... thats still £1200... and my car has done less than 35 000 miles

I have had one of the worst LR2's for reliability, too many faults to list but after 3 years from new it may be finally fixed but L/R customer service is poor. Eventually i contacted the MD of L/R, Included was my my PAS pump and rack & resovouir failure,amongst diff, wiper motor,3 dash panels,steering column sensors, turbo,AC pump, controlvalve, autobox, crash sensors,EGR valve, water loss etc etc and many other failures ! all occured from brand-new and its only done 20k now. Lack of interest by two dealers makes me vary weary of buying another EVER !

Just remembered I have also had two or three Fan speed controllers ! & a replacement tow bar due to a design fault ! which was only discovered at 3 years old ! when I had reported the tow bar as Knocking badly a few weeks into ownership from new ! There is more but just so much has gone wrong I forget how bad its been !
Its also had some new wiring harness due to internal corrosion causing no end of electrical issues !

Basically the cars not fit for purpose ! but no one would take the case on so I'm left with a piece of junk that just sits in the garage. I have only done 800 miles with it since July ! I just don't have the faith to use it !
Landrover you should be embarrassed to allow a customer to have to put up with such and utter junk ! shame on you all at L/R

Hi Guys

My first post on here, and rather unexpectedly its about my newest landy! Its a 08 Freelander 2 HSE, purchased in november with good service history, i have noticed what sounds like the start of this power steering problem? On initial start up im hearing a bit of squeeking from the PAS pump, the pump, belt and tensioner all apear to be new, but the reservoir looks older, Fluid looks good. Do you think if i change the reservoir i may have caught it in time or might i be looking at the full replacement?

Any advice apreciated.

Blimey - it all do puts you off the FL2. When I do change up, I want a decent level of reliability, not that my old girl has been so bad but physiologically it does all mount up as negative. Realise this is dangerous talk but I will look at other makes!!

I'm interested in buying a 2008 FL 2 with 63k on the clock being sold by an independent dealer. Vehicle has been dealer serviced since new and I discovered that in December it had failed its MOT due to a stiff steering. Owner paid out over £700 to get the steering fixed by a L/R dealer and given the list of part it looks to be related to the same issues here. Owner had to get the MOT done before he could sell, but I just wonder if he had advice to get rid asap. Who knows!!!

My question is, how good are these repairs to the steering. Can I expect this to return or have a few years problem free. Just looking for some honest opinions.

Swarf getting into the rack or summit. Well documented somewhere - may be subject of a re call, cant recall - did you see what happened there??
