Hi guys and gals, I was driving home from a night shift this morning in the misses series3 (sorry I've got a defender) on the m1 when the old girl cut out, really struggled to get her going aging then it happens again, 5 times in total. Seems if I played with points it would run again, points look ok but did not always start stright away after playing with dizzy, anyone else had same problem and what was the cause? Perry

2.25p? next time it happens, it is worth feeling the coil for heat though, incase it's knackered. it shouldn't be really really hot.

but since you mention points, i'd go with them and condensers, they do move and expand with heat and if you need to wait 15 mins until they are cool before it runs again then it adds up.

one of those leccy replacements simonbb sells worked wonders for my mates 2.25p, think it was under 30 for a 25d

Beware new old stock condensers (capacitors for the tech minded folks) They break down over the years, you are far better off with new unless it is in a "Blue Bag"

Cheers for reply, yes it has always been warm before cutting out, you will be driving along and it will just cut out whilst moving, I have tried to dip clutch to see if I can get it going but no joy

Dont completely discount fuelling issues as it can hard distinguish between leccy and fuel issues sometimes. But points systems arent much cop these days as has been said; parts for them are mostly crap. Leccy distributer ss has been said, will be a good investment with old one as a spare.

Aye, if the points don't fix it search "vapour lock" I gave up on my mechanical pump and now have an electric pump for the fuel. Fuel was boiling up in the mech pump making the car unreliable especially on hot days. However the symptoms of that were that the engine lost power (as the level in the carb went down) but didn't cut completely.

Does it cut out with nothing else being changed or cut out when you, say, put on the indicator on or apply the brakes (brake lights go on)? I ask as you said it happened at night - so you will have had your headlights on.

I had an issue with my Defender/90 where it cut out whenever I did something that took power - such as put it in reverse (tried to put reverse light on) and the engine died.

I've had a new relay box put in and replaced some wiring and that seems to have fixed it.
