in a new pickle
hi guys , iv read and posted on the fuelling adjustments topic about this

I have adjusted the fuelling on my 200tdi defender in every way but it has made no difference at all it dosent even smoke !? I could do with the extra power due to the gearing and my truck doesent feel quite right it feels a little flat at top end ( before and after the adjustments)

iv even turned the fuelling screw at the back right in to the max , by rights it should smoke like hell and have cable tied the turbo wastegate shut ( was seized before) but its still identical with no smoke or power

could it not be getting enough fuel for the adjustments to take effect? lift pump dead? really confused about this and need to sort this asap !

any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

It sounds like you may not be getting enough fuel to the high pressure pump - especially if you are underpowered at high engine speed. This would explain why moving the fuel limit screw is having no effect.

Have you changed the the fuel filter(s), checked the fuel lines for restrictions, checked the tank pick up unit for blockages, checked the operation of the lift pump?

hi thanks very much for the reply :)
fuel filter was changed a month ago but nothing else
yet as the problem only cropped up yesterday however they were my thoughts also, the vehicle has been using red diesel off road for 11 years and had been rolled before I had it so I wouldn't be surprised if the whole fuel system needs checking/replacing

would an electric pump be a good option? not a fan of land rover lift pumps every one I have had has been trouble

now I know that its a fueling issue to the high pressure pump I know where to start looking ! out of interest is it safe for the engine to have the turbo wategate constantly closed?

thanks again :)

Is there only one fuel filter? There may also be water seperator?

I would work on understanding what the issue is, before adding additional parts. An electric lift pump will not help if you have a blockage on the tank pick up pipe.

You should not fit an electric lift pump without checking it will not exceed the high pressure pump inlet pressure limit. A new/serviced standard lift pump should work perfectly well.

The wastegate needs to function correctly otherwise you will risk overspeeding the turbo at higher engine speeds and loads. Take it easy until it is fixed!

thank you I will order a new standard spec lift pump tomorrow while its apart ill blow out the lines and the gauze on the tank pick up, I have only seen one fuel filter on my truck up on the bulkhead , all the rest are just plastic fuel lines? ill have to refit the wategate one I sort this problem I don't fancy forking out for a turbo anytime soon ....

thanks for the help
