hi guys

my 300 tdi es auto suddenly dies out on me did hear some grinding noise before cut out , now engine strugling to turn a bit like when u have no power in the batt. anyway every one says timing belt so i took off roker cover and rocker arm and inpected all pushrods all ok do damage . then got told to take off timing casecover and inpected belt again belt look ok idler look new idler adj look new as well. then i got told to check my injector this could be leaking and something to do with hydrloics this is why my engine wouldn,t turn so he says now iam confused can pls someone pls explain many thanx serpentine

I think someone is suggesting that an injector is leaking so badly that it's filling the cylinder up with diesel and causing a hydraulic lock. You can't compress a fluid.
You could take the glow plugs out, get someone to crank the engine over while you watch (don't look down the holes while they do it). If an injector is leaking, you should get a jet of diesel blown out of that hole. Sounds a bit extreme though, injectors are unlikely to leak that badly and doesn't really explain the grinding noise.
Get a socket on the crank pulley and try turning the engine over by hand (with the glowplugs out) If it doesn't feel smooth, you might have some bore or bearing damage. What speed was it doing when it cut out?

hi
thanx for quick reply i have taken out the injectors they are going in for referb tomoz
i must have more than one injector leaking to think of it there was two injectors wet. i have just bin back out and turned the engine from crankshaft manually it turns fine mind u the rocker arm is removed would that make a differance?
my speed was about 10 mph i only just set off

while the rocker arm is removed you have no preassure working against the camshaft put the rocker arm back on and turn it manually again just to make sure the grinding noise isnt a knackered cam follower or cam on the shaft
next just to make sure about the grinding noise id take the starter motor off and make sure the pinion and drivewheel are engageing and disengaging freely by testing it on a spare battery while its on the floor
better to be sure and check the obvious than spend a fortune on the wrong thing ive also learned in the past that one of the many causes for injectors to leak is exessive preassure in the cylinder caused by badly worn or incorectly set cam and follower tolerances
hope this helps

hi
will put the rocker arm on tommorow morning and test ,i am not to mechanicly minded but when u mention cam and follower are they in the main crankshaft in the engine block?

ps thanx for all your help will keep u posted on how i get on

hi mate
rocker arm back on turn the engine all seems to be ok rolling smooth however injecttors are out ! doing the glow plugs and n0 1 glow plug is un screwed but carnt remove due to the pump being in the way i can clearly see that ther are 4 bolts retaning the pump it does look like pump is only housed on top of timing caseing so it can be removed but not to sure

they are in the main block but connect to the rocker arm via the pushrods into the head if the engine turns freeley with all the rockers installed it should be fine
as for the fuel pump its probably gonna be set up with the timing on the engine if not sure dont remove it yourself till youve atleast marked all the pulleys gears and belts to line up with each other so they go back together in exactly the same way they came apart my top tip for this is use tippex it doesent rub off that easy and is highly visible
also i neglected to mention dont ever turn the crankshaft pulley while the connecting rods for the rocker arms are out the cam followers are just little cups that are on the bottom end of those rods sat on top of the cams if the engine is turned with the rods removed the cups will drop off the cams and fall into the crank houseing and are a bastard to get out even moreso a complete nightmare to get back in right its basically a full strip down and rebuild job then
i learned this the hard way it cost me a hell of a lot of trouble time and effort

ps im not a qualified mechanic on paper but ive been in and around garages since i was 14 im now 29 i only pass on information based on personal experience because i cant just stand back and watch someone else struggle i believe information being gathered for personal use should be public domain and not charged for

hi john
when i removed the rocker arm the push rods were left in i only took them out one by one to inspect them. but i did turn the crank manually several times while the rocker arm was out

put every thing back together just leveing the rocker cover off tried to start engine it was turning fine it ran briefly then cut out loads of blue white smoke.
now it wont turn again back to the same problem so what did i do to free my engine???
